KY Supreme Court: 2019 State of the Judiciary Address

Chief Justice Minton says complex court challenges call for sophisticated solutions in 2019 State of the Judiciary Address.

By Leigh Anne Hiatt

Frankfort, KY - Chief Justice of Kentucky John D. Minton Jr. gave the legislature an update on Friday on how the Judicial Branch is "combining new approaches with tried and true methods" to improve how the courts serve the public.

"With each passing year, the issues and challenges facing the court system become more intricate and complex, thanks to rapid changes in technology, social norms and business practices," he said. "Sophisticated times call for sophisticated measures. From civil justice reform to judicial redistricting to opening child protection cases to addressing court delays and the opioid epidemic, we're dealing with sensitive, thorny issues that require all of the expertise, intelligence and imagination we can muster."

These comments were part of the annual State of the Judiciary address before the General Assembly's Interim Joint Committee on Judiciary at the Capital Annex in Frankfort. The full address can be found here: SOJremarks_09132019 (PDF). To watch the chief justice give his address, visit KET's website.

Possible UAW strike could affect Corvette plant

By Don Sergent, Bowling Green Daily News

Plans to ramp up production of the new mid-engine eighth generation Corvette and increase employment at Bowling Green's General Motors Assembly Plant could be detoured by a labor dispute. GM and United Auto Workers negotiators haven't been able to come to terms on a new contract, with pay and benefits for younger "in-progression" workers and part-timers a major issue, and the current deal with the union expires at midnight Saturday.

Water conditions at Lake Cumberland being monitored

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - Biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources are closely monitoring water conditions at Lake Cumberland with fish starting to show signs of stress due to elevated water temperatures and depleted oxygen levels.

"We have been experiencing some shad and alewife die-offs in different parts of the lake the past few weeks, which is due to the continued high water temperatures and deteriorating oxygen levels," said Marcy Anderson, Southeastern District fisheries biologist with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "The striped bass bite had been good up to this week, but now the fish are getting sluggish, which is a sign they are getting stressed due to poor water quality conditions."

Lake Cumberland reaches a depth of 200 feet in the old river channel near Wolf Creek Dam. Its depth allows the lake to support cool-water species, such as walleye and striped bass. A combination of factors can deplete critical dissolved oxygen levels in the cooler water depths preferred by these species.

When flooding rains swelled Lake Cumberland to record levels earlier this year, record discharges followed from Wolf Creek Dam. When water is discharged, it is pulled from the cooler depths of the lake.
