Podcast about unsolved Nelson Co. murders

By Forrest Berkshire, The Kentucky Standard

A new podcast drops this week that is the first in a planned 10-part series focusing on five unsolved crimes in Nelson County. The series is the latest project for investigative reporter Jessica Noll, who covered the 2013 murder of Bardstown Police Officer Jason Ellis and reconstructed his final shift for a long-form journalism online report titled "Exit 34." A veteran journalist, Noll said the Ellis story always stuck with her. "For me, I still get shivers down my spine driving past exit 34," she told The Standard.

Henry Co. man escapes fire thanks to barking dog

By Tammy Shaw, Henry County Local

There's a famous, award-winning novel "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" by Mark Haddon. In Larry Ingabrand's case, a curious dog that barked him awake around 3 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, may have saved the Port Royal resident's life. "The dog kept barking and woke me up," Ingabrand said. "When I stood up, I smelled smoke. I grabbed my coat and shoes and got out."

CPD: Found Needles

By Officer Adam Cravens

COLUMBIA, KY August 28, 2019 -- This afternoon while conducting a training session at the roadside park off of Highway 55 South just outside of Columbia, a number of discarded needle syringes were located by K9 Gunner and his handler, Officer John Dial.

The Columbia Police department is asking people to always use caution when taking children to a public place. As drug problems increase within the community this is always a possibility to come upon similar findings.

Should you or family members find needles or anything similar, do not handle them yourself, but contact appropriate authorities to collect and dispose of them properly.

Letter: Not just here

Martha Berry writes:
It's not in just this area. I was looking out the window of a 4th floor office building in Louisville not too long ago. A lady who was obviously an employee got in her car and sat for a few minutes, finishing her drink. She then poured the remainder of the drink out of her car onto the pavement. That was ok since it would evaporate. She started her car and then THREW THE CUP OUT too. I could not believe what I had just seen! --Martha

Gary Roy retired earlier in the month from the Columbia Police Department after 20 years of service in Columbia and Russell County. Letter: UFO is likely level 1 stonefly

Marie Freeman writes:
Just a logical guess after researching. It's amazing how many things live in the water that later turn into a creature. There are so many different organisms in this family.

Benthic macroinvertebrates are organisms that live underwater in our streams and rivers, lack a backbone, and can be seen by the naked eye. Monitors identify the macroinvertebrates they collect. Based on the macroinvertebrate diversity and sensitivity to pollution, we gain an understanding of our streams' health.

Letter: Agrees with James

Michele Hale writes:
I agree with James completely on this issue. It's nothing but sheer laziness on the part of these sorry lowdown individuals that leave messes like this in public areas and on the sides of the road. No wonder people are made fun of in this area. Trash breeds trash. I'm just glad I was raised better than that. --Michele
