December 2, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the December 2, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. It includes reminisces of Coomer's Cafe, and then a lengthy recollection by Mrs. Coomer of the businesses that were on the Public Square in 1943 when she took the reins at Coomer's Cafe. Only a select few of the businesses that were on the Square in 1977 are still around today, but a lot of folks will remember when the local retail scene still included Holmes Men's Wear, Ben Franklin, Young & Wilson, and Firestone. --Pen

Bob Cheatham owns up to it
Bea Beard at Coomer's Cafe says that the restaurant hasn't seen anything the likes of the times when Bob and Eva Cheatham ran the cafe just after they were married. "Sometimes Bob would come in here not acting right and Eva would get mad at him and throw saucers, cups, or anything handy. Bob would run out of here hollering," Bea says.

I asked Bob about it and he says it's true. "Sometimes I would be tending to other business and would be delayed in coming to work and Eva didn't like it too well," he admits, "and she sometimes threw things at me, but I don't ever remember her actually hitting me."

Coomer's is a landmark
Coomer's Cafe holds the distinction of being run under the longest continuous management in one location of any business in Columbia. Myrtle Coomer has been the manager of Coomer's Cafe for 34 years, since June 25, 1943.

Of Rainmakers and Pioneers

By Mike Watson

Adair County has been the home of far more inventive folk than people give credit. From the earliest settlement right up to modern times the inquisitive minds of local men and women have conceived of patent-worthy products, from agricultural improvements to ground-breaking medical concepts, procedures and instruments.

Mankind has always wanted, and often attempted, to control the weather. We have had no great need for rainfall this season, but there are those times when just about any methods would be entertained to bring that lifesaving liquid from the heavens.

Rainmakers have existed in one for or other for centuries, if not longer. Today we hear of the seeding of clouds to create rain. The concept was in existence long ago, thought perhaps not carried out successfully due to the restraints of earth-bound entrepreneurs. Here is such a tale from :

ACSO: Two airlifted after injury rollover

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

Two Adair County residents were airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital after being ejected from their vehicle during a single-vehicle collision.

On Thursday, July 25, 2019, at 1:34amCT, Adair County 911 received a call of a possible auto collision with injuries, and Adair County Deputy Josh Durbin was dispatched to the scene. Upon his arrival, Deputy Durbin found that a vehicle had overturned and at least two people had been ejected.

The investigation indicates that Chrystal Arsin, 40, of Columbia, was traveling East on KY 206 (Liberty Rd) in a 1999 Ford F-150 when she dropped off the right hand shoulder of the highway. Arsin attempted to correct but was unable to, resulting in an over correction which caused the truck to overturn multiple times. Arsin and her passenger, Amy Padgett, 19, of Columbia were ejected during the overturn. Neither were wearing a seat belt.

Adair County EMS Responded to the scene and gave treatment before transferring them to TJ Health of Columbia. They where sent from there by air flight to University of Louisville Hospital.

The Adair County Sheriff's Office is continuing the investigation.

Mystery answered: looking across Campbellsville Street

Photographer Mike Watson writes of his rooftop observation, "This was taken from the Farmers Market parking lot (shot toward Campbellsville Street), across from city hall. Saw this for the first time while waiting in line for snow cone during Truck it up."

Jason Curry got it right. Thanks for the guesses!
