More on tick tubes and protecting honey bees

NOTE: Updated on 7/19/2019 to include a manufacturer statement

By Marie Freeman

Are Tick Tubes Safe for Bees?
Unfortunately, the active ingredient in tick tubes is toxic for bees. Bees are an important part of our ecological system, so it is best to keep the tick tubes away from flowers and flowering trees and shrubs. It is also best to keep them low, which makes sense since we are targeting mostly mice.

The benefit of tick tubes is that they eliminate the traditional method of killing ticks, which is spraying broadly in vegetative areas where insects are gathering pollen. According to a spokesperson for Damminix Tick Tubes, "Permethrin is highly toxic to ticks and other insects in spray form. Damminix Tick Tubes are not a spray but rather an environmentally responsible treatment that effectively gets to the root of the problem without harming other life forms and vegetation. For our application, the chemical requires an emulsification agent in order to release from the cotton. It is when the cotton comes into contact with the oil on the mouse skin and fur that the chemical is released. There is no drift of run off of the chemical. Exposure to beneficial insects would be minimal when using Damminix Tick Tubes."

Protecting Honey Bees
Care should be taken when applying permethrin or placing tick tubes. When you are applying the permethrin to the cotton or lint, make sure you do it away from blooming trees, shrubs, and flowers.

KY Afield Outdoors: Productive Late Summer Bass Fishing

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - The constant heavy rain systems that plagued Kentucky all spring and early summer finally abated over the past few weeks. For the first time in two years, the brown, withered grass of late summer is a common sight in Kentucky. Usually, cracked ground and crunchy grass signal potential drought and bring angst. However, after record rainfall last year and an extremely wet spring and early summer this year, the brown grass is a bit welcomed.

The hottest two-month stretch of the year is here and largemouth bass anglers must make adjustments if they want to continue catching fish during the challenging dog days of late July through August.

Locating the depth of the thermocline is the first priority for bass anglers fishing Kentucky's major reservoirs in late summer.

Letter: Fair and legal way to do things

James Roberts writes:
I just wanted to say that I personally don't know Mr. Fletcher. From my understanding he put bids out on these vehicles the same as any other dealer had the opportunity to do. From a taxpayer perspective that is the fair and legal way to do it. Also, I think that Mr. Fletcher has stated in the past that he owns property, pays taxes and banks here. So I think that he's got that base covered also! Just my take on the matter. --James

Letter: Flag with blue stripes

Kathy Jones writes:
I was at Walmart this morning and noticed a flag that had blue stripes instead of red and the field of stars was different waving from a large truck. I was going to ask someone about this flag but was unable to. Can someone explain this flag? Thanks. --Kathy
Kathy, thanks for writing. It's possible that what you saw was the "Thin Blue Line" flag, which is black and white with a blue stripe in the center, and often used to show support for Law Enforcement. You can read more about it at wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin_blue_line.

A variation of the black and white flag with a red stripe in the center has been used by some to represent Fire Departments. There are also numerous other variations of the US flag that are used to symbolize affilation with various other political and social groups.

Cooking fresh foods with new cookbook in mind

By Linda Waggener

Jackie Montgomery highly recommends a new cookbook as, "THE book for people who believe they can't cook and wish they could - it's a fun, easy to read framework for understanding flavor balances of salt, acid, heat and fat."

She and I met up at the Farmers Market on the Square Saturday and were inspired to go to her kitchen and put a meal together, thinking about all the fresh foods in relation to her new discoveries in the cookbook "SaltFatAcidHeat" by Samin Nosrat as a basis.

Letter - be aware of new Asian longhorned tick

Marie Freeman of the Breeding community of Adair County writes:

"I'm very concerned about this new tick species, Asian longhorned tick, that has come into the United States. Not only is it self cloning but it seems to not have an issue with cut grass and sun.

"I think if we all incorporate tick tubes in the community that we could really take the numbers down, and not hurt the environment. So many people don't realize that most diseases that the human gets from the tick actually start with the white footed mouse.

"Tick tubes very cheap to make if you can't afford to buy them. I save all my paper towel rolls and my toilet tissue rolls now and my dryer lint. Next spring I am going to spot them all over my property. And I'm going to try to develop one with PVC pipe that would be beneficial to the squirrels in their nests.

"Here are a couple of sites I have found and want to share:
