The photo at right shows his blocked driveway, his only way out, and he wrote, "We are in a mess here in Burkesville -- EMS brought medicine and groceries yesterday, they are a Godsend."

Renewing farm tags benefits 4H and FFA

By Tony Rose

4-H/FFA has an opportunity to raise funds for Adair County and statewide 4-H/FFA programs through the Kentucky Ag Tag Donation program.

Since 2012, Kentucky Farmers have the option to make a $10.00 voluntary donation when they purchase or renew their license plate. Commissioner of Agriculture, Ryan Quarles, will again equally divide the amount raised among 4-H, FFA and Kentucky Proud. As an individual that makes the voluntary donation for your farm vehicle, you help 4-H grow strong leaders for tomorrow, advance agricultural education in Kentucky, and promote Kentucky farm products.

Farmers can make the donation of $10 when renewing their farm license plates at the county clerk's office in March. With more than 184,000 farm plates bought or renewed each year in Kentucky, the commissioner's action can generate significant funds to support these three outstanding programs.

Commentary: The United Methodist Decision

Commentary by Pastor Jason Roop
Asbury United Methodist Church

Asbury UMC is releasing the following statement regarding the recent General Conference vote surrounding the definition of Biblical marriage and ordination of LGBTQ clergy. The United Methodist Church affirmed its stance on Christian marriage as consisting of one man and one woman.

The United Methodist Church made a bold declaration over the past few days to take a stand for Biblical Christianity. No one saw this coming. However, with God all things are possible, and He often shows up when the odds are against His people.

Springtime rays call for ice cream days. Lindsey Wilson College International Student Programs (ISP) took full advantage of the beautiful weather and had an ice cream fundraiser.

By Cheryl Meadows

Somerset, KY - Southeast Kentucky Economic Development Corp. (SKED) will expand its successful Supplier Education & Economic Development (SEED) training program in 2019, with funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).

Letter: Plaster lath and drywall

Doug McCammish writes:
Most homes older than 70 years will have plaster lath in the walls. Drywall was invented in 1916 (look it up), but was only sold as tiles for a while before they figured out how to make it in sheets. Drywall in homes did not become generally used until the 1950's.

My dad used drywall in the house he built in 1952-53 and did the drywall himself because there were so few contractors who knew how. Can you imagine constructing a lath and plaster wall today? --Doug

Letter: The plaster process

Kenny Davis writes:
The laths were nailed to the wall studs, the wet plaster was then applied to the laths, some of the plaster would then go in the spaces between the laths to hold the plaster to the vertical wall. This was labor- and time-consuming. It also required a certain amount of skill. --Kenny

Kentucky Shakespeare program visits ACES

By Debbie Cowan

ACES students recently enjoyed a visit from actors with the Kentucky Shakespeare program. Students were treated to a live performance of The Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare's classic comedy about the relationship between the scheming Petruchio and headstrong Kate.

The play provided a framework for students to identify relationship dynamics, self-respect and bullying behavior. The actors also visited with the Camp SAFARI after-school program and taught students a lesson on Renaissance dance.

The program was sponsored by The Family Resource Center and funded in part by donations from the Lindsey Wilson College Bonner program.

House passes amended School Safety and Resiliency Act

By Matt Smith

Frankfort, KY - An amended version of the School Safety and Resiliency Act is headed back to the Senate for consideration as the House voted 96-3 to approve it today.

House Majority Floor Leader Bam Carney, who carried the bill in the House and is a school teacher himself, shared how his experience as an educator has shaped his commitment to making Kentucky schools safer.

"After the horrific situation in Marshall County last year, action by this body was critical to move the ball forward on combatting violence in our schools," Carney added. "This is a major bipartisan step toward securing our schools and strengthening our students. With passage of Senate Bill 1, the General Assembly has taken a bold step forward in improving the safety of schools across the Commonwealth."

The School Safety and Resiliency Act is based on the findings of the School Safety Working Group, which was created in 2018 to gather feedback from stakeholders and put forward a framework to tackle the issue.

The diet of our American Robin debated in February 2019

By Linda Waggener

The Robin's winter feeding has come under the microscope this month after one writer referred to seeing them dining on berries, and another commented they don't eat produce.

We looked back in the archives and found that writer/photographer Billy Joe Fudge had documented a feeding frenzy on Lowe's Lane in Columbia in the year 2010.

He wrote, "Most of us only identify the American Robin as singular birds pulling earthworms from our lawns and paired up to raise their families in the trees and shrubbery in our landscapes, but Robins flock up during the winter to eat seeds while eating earthworms is not practical."
