Statement from Burkesville Mayor: Flood Update 2-26-19

By Burkesville Mayor Billy Guffey

Hello everyone. The river rose another 6" or so overnight to break the record. We are now at 55'9" at the boat ramp. We are expecting the river to rise some more, but we are hoping not much. Maybe a foot or so.

We also hope it crests today at some point. Which will mean it will hold at that level for at least a few weeks. Thats right. A few weeks. And here is why.

The Corps of Engineers told us in a call yesterday that they plan to continue to release 60,000 cubic feet per second of water from the dam for at least two weeks. That means wherever the river crests, it will stay for some time. So that means wherever you see backwater from the river, it will be there for a while. That includes all bridges and roadways that are currently covered.

CJ article on Lake Cumberland water levels

By Chris Kenning, Louisville Courier Journal

Heavy rains and flooding that have pushed Kentucky's Lake Cumberland water levels to a record high are creating the biggest test yet for a dam that was considered highly vulnerable to failure before a $594 million repair was completed five years ago.

The rain-swollen lake on Monday forced the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to release a record 58,730 cubic feet of water per second from the Wolf Creek Dam, causing some flooding along the Cumberland River in low-lying areas downstream.

Letter: sees partnering with LWC an answer to empty buildings

By James Roberts

I have an idea for the downtown building situation. If the owners cannot be found or aren’t going to fix their buildings and the city condemns them, then fix them up and rent the spaces out. Have a partnership with Lindsey Wilson College on a cost share to remodel them and rent the studios and apartments to students going to Lindsey Wilson.

Then, when the students are not staying there when college is not in session they could be rented out on Airbnb.
