Opinion: USMCA Trade Modernization Benefits KY and N. America

Political Commentary by Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin

Frankfort, KY - Throughout the very complex trade negotiations to replace NAFTA via a trade deal known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement on Trade or USMCA, President Trump, Secretary Ross and the Trump Administration have been the subject of no small amount of criticism. As Governor of Kentucky and as a businessman with decades of experience across a wide array of industries, I have intentionally not joined in that criticism. In fact, I applaud the President and his Administration for working through a complicated deal that involves many more players than just the three mentioned in the title, has many moving parts and takes into consideration regions well beyond North America.

By Bill Peoples

Jamestown, KY - Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District announce that releases are expected to increase to 60,000 cubic feet of water per second (cfs) by noon Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019.

Inflows into Lake Cumberland were larger than forecast and the lake's flood storage is quickly reaching its capacity, prompting water managers to move up the timetable for the increased releases. Impacts are expected in areas near the river downstream, especially in the Cumberland River reach in Kentucky from Rowena to Burkesville.

As of 10 a.m. on Friday, the elevation of 749.74 at Lake Cumberland is the highest observed since the pool of record of 751.69 in May 1984. A total of 70 percent of the flood control pool is currently being utilized.

ACSO: CPD cruiser struck after high speed pursuit

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

On Sunday morning, February 24, 2019, around 5:40amCT, Russell Springs Police entered Adair County in pursuit of a maroon 2016 Nissan Altima. Sheriff's Deputy Joey Keith joined in the pursuit to assist close to the Adair County line on KY 80. Pursuit speeds reached up to 120 mph as they headed toward Columbia.

As they approached the City Limits of Columbia, Columbia Police Officer Adam Cravens attempted to block the road to keep the pursuit from entering into the city where morning traffic was picking up. At this point the fleeing suspect rammed Officer Cravens and continued on. Although it didn't immediately stop the suspect, Officer Cravens efforts resulted in heavy damage to the suspect's vehicle that eventually forced him off the road and into an earth embankment about quarter mile past the impact, and just shy of the city.

Kentucky Color: As It Should Be

By Billy Joe Fudge

A little late, late afternoon/early evening, Dog Days of Summer mood setting for all you waterlogged Winterites suffering from The Shivering Delirium!

Melancholy floods my soul
Sitting on the porch at dusk.
The birds have ceased to chirp
In the dark recesses
Of leafy crowns.
And silence,
Almost,
Slips beneath
The webbed arms of Gray Bats.
