Video: Wolf Creek Dam, sounds like Niagara Falls

By Tiffany Kessler

We joined a slew of fellow "rubberneckers" all determined to see for ourselves the amazing volume of water Lake Cumberland has collected during recent rains. Hitting a new record level, water has been released through Wolf Creek Dam at an incredible rate. Getting as close as possible, the rushing sound drowned out all other noise and you could feel the force of it falling. A continuous stream of interested folks captured the scene on handy iPhones.

Fighting the Crisis of Addiction - What is Isaiah House?

"The crisis we face is not one that will easily be overcome and it takes all of us working together to fight back against this epidemic. Kentucky is in the grips of an addiction epidemic and nearly everyone has been affected, either personally or by someone they love. In 2017, more than 1,400 Kentuckians tragically lost their lives due to a drug overdose in the commonwealth. It's a startling statistic because addiction doesn't discriminate. It doesn't care about your race, your religion, your income level, what your career is or which family you come from..."

By Zac Oakes
zac.oakes@isaiah-house.org

As Linda mentioned a few days ago, I recently accepted a position working in the public relations department for Isaiah House, a Christ-centered, non-profit, drug and alcohol addiction treatment center in Willisburg (Washington County) KY.

We provide short Medicaid (28 days) treatment and long-term treatment (8-11 months) with more than 20 sober living homes for transitional living. We have a total of 156 beds which also includes the short-term Patricia's Place in Willisburg, as well as the Greg Kuertz and Jake Bowen Centers in Chaplin (Nelson County) for men and the Lisa Walker Center for women in Harrodsburg.

Sen. Max Wise's Legislative Update - Fri 22 Feb 2019

Senator Wise reports on fourth week of the 2019 regular session.
Personal political commentary/opinions of the writer

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

Squeaky floors. No vote-counting tote boards. And nearly two-century-old decor.

That's what greeted Senators when they convened for the fourth week of the 153rd regular session of the Kentucky General Assembly on Tuesday inside the Old State Capitol Building. The nostalgia commemorated President's Day, often used to observe the birthday of one of Kentucky's greatest sons, President Abraham Lincoln. The 16th President of the United States would have been 210 this year.

The Senate unanimously passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 116 immortalizing the event. The document recounted how the Old Capitol was constructed from 1827 until 1830 by Lexington architect Gideon Shryock. He was just 25 when he was commissioned to build the Old Capitol - his very first project.

Wolf Creek Dam increasing releases to historic levels

By Bill Peoples

Jamestown, KY - With Lake Cumberland approaching its pool of record, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is planning to step up releases at Wolf Creek Dam to historic levels, with potential flooding in low-lying areas downstream.

Water managers at the Nashville District headquarters in Nashville, TN, said Wolf Creek Dam is currently discharging water at a rate of 36,200 cubic feet per second, but plan to increase to 40,000 cfs as early as Sunday, and 45,000 cfs 24 to 48 hours after that. The largest amount of water ever released from the dam is 40,000 cfs in January 1974.

"We are working directly with state officials to inform the public downstream that a significant amount of water will be released in a controlled manner from Lake Cumberland to lower the pool," said Lt. Col. Cullen Jones, Nashville District commander. "The ground is saturated and the heavy rainfall upstream has led to a much greater inflow into the lake than we've been releasing at the dam. These increases are necessary because the lake is quickly filling up, and increasing releases in a controlled manner now reduces the likelihood of even greater releases being required in the future."
