By Neil Thornbury, CEO, TJ Regional Health

"The best award an organization can win is the confidence of their community." -Quint Studer

The community spoke, and we listened. With your valuable feedback on areas of opportunity for improvement, some significant changes are taking place at T.J. Regional Health facilities in Columbia.

One of the most sweeping changes occurred on January 1, 2019 in T.J. Health Columbia's emergency department when a new group of Board Certified Physicians came onboard and began treating patients. These new physicians are committed to excellence and will strive to serve the community with the highest quality emergency care that meets or exceeds your standards and expectations.

In addition to this change in the emergency department, inpatient beds are open, and our team is providing compassionate care to patients on a daily basis.

Fourth annual Coming of Age ceremony held at LWC

By Travis Smith

Friday, January 25, marked the Fourth Annual Coming of Age Ceremony for international students studying abroad at Lindsey Wilson College. Traditionally, the Coming of Age ceremony -- also known as Seijin no Hi -- is held throughout city halls in Japan every January.

The ceremony, which dates to the 8th century, celebrates when a person in Japan reaches legal adulthood, which is the age of 20. Seven LWC students from Japan were recognized during the ceremony on Friday at the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center.

Classmates, faculty, staff and area residents gathered in the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center as Mayor of Columbia Pamela Hoots congratulated the seven Japanese students and noted important world news events since their birth.

"Twenty years has passed and you are one step closer to being a member of society," Hoots said. "Dream big and be hopeful."

Clark: Child welfare transformation will improve the lives of KY children

Commentary By Eric T. Clark
Commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services

It is a staggering, record-high number in Kentucky: 10,000 kids in foster care.

Here is another number: 800. That's how many adults gathered in early January for the inaugural Transformers of Child Welfare Summit. These were social workers, judges, educators, government officials, faith-based community leaders, parents, relatives and others. They are all committed to improve our child welfare system and the lives of Kentucky children.

Summit participants heard from state and national experts, shared ideas, traded resources, and made plans to dig into the complex issues ingrained into our child welfare system, which includes foster care, adoption, relative caregiving, prevention services, and many other support services.

Comer passes on Kentucky governor's race

By Phillip M. Bailey, Louisville Courier Journal

U.S. Rep. James Comer has decided against running for Kentucky governor, but not before throwing some stiff jabs at Republican incumbent Matt Bevin. In a statement released late Sunday, Comer, who represents Western Kentucky, said he had "zero desire to run against a multimillionaire" for the GOP nomination.

Comer had said for weeks that he would enter the race if Bevin decided not to seek re-election. But Bevin filed late Friday with a new running mate, state Sen. Ralph Alvarado, R-Winchester, ending months of speculation.

Adult Ed Services, WIOA partners aligned under one agency

Frankfort, KY - In an effort to align the state's workforce resources, Gov. Matt Bevin has signed an Executive Order placing adult education services within the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet (EWDC).

Kentucky's adult education services play a key role in helping Kentuckians become college and career ready by preparing individuals for the GED(R) high school equivalency test, postsecondary education and training, career readiness certificates, and employment.

In fiscal year 2017-2018, more than 19,000 students were enrolled in Kentucky Skills U, the state's adult education program. The new Office of Adult Education, housed within EWDC's Department for Workforce Investment, will continue to provide free adult education services in all 120 counties helping to ensure Kentuckians receive the education needed for employment in high-demand job sectors.

Beshear: Watch out for tax-time scammers

By Terry Sebastian/Crystal Staley

Frankfort, KY - As Kentuckians begin electronically filing their state and federal income taxes Jan. 28, Attorney General Andy Beshear is asking them to be prepared for an increase in scams calls.

Beshear said tax season scams typically involve scammers pretending to be an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent who claims they need to verify the victim's personal and financial information over the phone or claims that the victim owes back taxes.

Once the scammer has the victim's information, they can steal tax returns and other funds by changing the deposit to a reloadable money card.

Comment: pay checks should be stopped from top down

By Linda Waggener

Just my thoughts on the national news about the government shutdown relief for three weeks - I think it would be more right for the paychecks to be withheld from the top down next time our leaders use this option.

In the business world, should any company/organization in this country get away with withholding paychecks from lower level workers for a month while commanding they come to work?

The next leader to keep drawing his/her own pay and full benefits package - while pointing a finger of blame at someone else as a reason they can't do their work - should simply surrender his/her own paycheck and go without it until they negotiate a way to keep work going.

Remembering Pat Bell

By Rollin Knifley

There are two kinds of people we encounter in this life. There are those we meet and soon forget and those we meet that leave their fingerprints on our lives. Pat and Martha Bell left theirs on me, and my entire family.

One of Pat's paintings hangs in Dad's house. We were heartbroken when Martha passed in 2012. I was deployed at the time and couldn't make it to the service, I think it bothered me more not being able to come home for the service than it did being in the part of the world I was in at the time. My mother thought the world of Pat and Martha, and their comfort when Mom passed meant a lot to Kevin, Chris and I.

Letter: Old Knifley memories remain

Patty Bunch writes:
I love reading others memories of Knifley, the place of my birth. The house where my brother and I were born is still there, spared from the destruction so many structures of Old Knifley met in the name of progress.

Seems a shame more couldn't have been spared when I haven't seen water over so much of the land claimed for the lakeway. I guess I don't understand the ways of engineering, at any rate I wasn't consulted about the matter. The fact is Old Knifley is past but my memories remain and that's nice. --Patty
