Christmastime at Creelsboro Country Store

By Tiffany Kessler

We saw the building sell at auction five years ago and I remember having the same thought as everyone else in attendance that day - what do you do with a 100+ year old general store in serious need of some intense care if it were to ever survive the hands of time. For the sake of history, I hoped so badly a buyer would swoop in and save the dry, skeletal remains, however we'd seen plenty of similar auctions with amazing old homes and buildings. I knew the chances were slim. More times than not - they are purchased, picked through, and left to cave in or be torn down.

And there it would go...the storefront with a million stories.

Little did any of us in the crowd know, including the new owner, what a magnificent fate lay ahead.

Christmas memories: around the music of seasons past

By Linda Waggener

The following memories came after a call to share about things that warmed our hearts from early Christmases: Ramona Barbee, good friend from Columbia writes, "I remember my first record player and one of my few records was Fats Domino and Blue Berry Hill."

Connie Gupton, native of Sulphur Well, KY, daughter of Hobart and Ruby Scott, shared a neighborhood of friends and we share this memory. She writes, "I remember lots of hours of music jamming at our house when we were kids. Your dad, my mom and brother and always at least a half dozen more. I think about every Friday and/or Saturday night there were musicians in our living room just having a wonderful evening of making music. Those were special times and cherished memories."

These memories came in relating to this link about first record players.

1918: the year Christmas stood still

Several events and circumstances converged to make Christmas in Adair County a subdued affair a century ago this week.

by Jim The Great War had ended almost eight weeks earlier but the effects lingered: shortages of staple supplies and some foodstuffs still existed; there were many empty chairs across the county of the young men and women not yet returned (and of too many who would never return); and influenza held much of the world, including Adair County, in its deadly grip.

A somewhat mild wave of influenza swept the states in the spring of 1918 but subsided within a few months. The second wave started in the northeast in August 1918 and quickly built to pandemic level, spread rapidly by the never-ceasing flow of soldiers going from base to base and traveling home on furloughs.

Christmas Memories: from Mike & Renea Watson

Christmas Memories and Tradition abound at homes of Adair County Historian Mike Watson and wife Renea: The Christmas Closet. The Fake Green tree he prefers in these times, but with found memories of going to the woods with Dad or Brother in childhood. The silver tree which goes up annually for one dad to his and family cat's great glee and horrification of many others. And much much more, in this delightful Christmas day reminiscence

By Mike Watson
Adair County Historian

Christmas memories are very important and most folk have one or two that come vividly to mind. I do remember several specific Christmases, but they were all good for me. I remember going to the woods with dad or my brothers and cutting a tree. This was tradition, until the fad for artificial trees came along. Then, and since, with one year as exception, we have always had a green "fake" tree. No mess, no muss. After we moved to town and settled in on High Street, we had the "Christmas closet" that housed nothing but Yuletide trimmings.
