KY 1st to apply for federal approval of hemp program By Sean Southard Washington, DC - Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles submitted the Commonwealth's regulatory framework for hemp to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for approval as required in the 2018 farm bill. Kentucky is the first state in the nation to apply for USDA approval of its hemp program. "Kentucky's regulatory framework perfectly aligns with the requirements spelled out in the farm bill," Commissioner Quarles said. "Hemp growers, processors, and manufacturers deserve swift action so they can proceed with confidence. Kentucky has led the charge on industrial hemp with bipartisan support for the past five years. Now we are eager to take the next step toward solidifying Kentucky's position as the epicenter of industrial hemp production and processing in the United States." Commissioner Quarles attended the presidential farm bill signing ceremony today in Washington and personally delivered the state plan to USDA leadership. Jake McKinley to be Milwaukee Brewers Pitching Coordinator By Jordan Alves Campbellsville, KY - Jake McKinley, a former Tiger baseball assistant coach, was hired by the Milwaukee Brewers as the Pitching Coordinator, officials announced recently. McKinley was at Campbellsville from 2007-2009 as a graduate assistant and full-time assistant for the Tigers. Ventriloquism museum will have a new home in Northern KY By Sarah Brookbank, The Kentucky Enquirer The world's only museum dedicated to ventriloquism is looking for a new home and the charitable arm of one of Northern Kentucky's largest home builders is helping that happen. The Drees Homes Foundation has pledged $200,000 to Vent Haven Museum, a ventriloquism museum in Fort Mitchell. Soldier dad surprises son with special gift By Jesse Jones, The Eagle Post, for the Kentucky New Era Oak Grove's Holiday Walking Trail Parade had to be moved inside Valor Hall Saturday night over concerns it might get a little wet. The miniature parade would be turned into a different kind of event. The floats would still be there (if idle), but there would be refreshments and a face painters. Santa also waited on a dais to talk to any child who wanted to tell him what they wanted for Christmas. It ended up not mattering, as Valor Hall still got wet. April 8, 2019 is deadline for recycling, composting, and household hazardous waste grant applications By John Mura/Lanny Brannock Frankfort, KY - The Energy and Environment Cabinet's Division of Waste Management is accepting grant applications for projects that develop an integrated recycling infrastructure, including public education programs, and for composting projects and household hazardous waste (HHW) collection events. "These grants have been very successful in helping counties deal with their household hazardous waste, get some composting operations up and running, and most importantly developing recycling infrastructure across the state," said Charles Snavely, Secretary of the Energy and Environment Cabinet. "Moving forward we really need to emphasize regional cooperation in Kentucky's recycling programs, in order to capture efficiencies of scale." First Lady, state employees spread holiday cheer By Doug Hogan Frankfort, KY - First Lady Glenna Bevin joined staff at the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) in the L&N Building in Louisville to spread Christmas cheer. The community celebration included pictures with Santa, cookies, candy canes, and cider. Families also were able to take home enough food items to prepare a traditional Christmas meal. "Every family should be able to have a good meal together at Christmas," First Lady Bevin said. "This mobile food bank and the fun we had today were meant to make the holiday brighter for these families." Sara Roush, 98, matriarch of Adair County, KY family Adair County High School retired art teacher Henrietta Scott's mother, Sara Rousch, is known locally to many who have admired her art over the years at showings in the Lindsey Wilson College Lucretia Begley Art Gallery and at Jeff and Henrietta Scott's art studio in Sparksville, KY. Sara Metta Roush, 98, of Louisville, KY passed away on Monday, December 17, 2018. Cremation was chosen in honor of her wishes. There will be a family celebration of her life at her birthplace in Ohio where her ashes will be interred in the family cemetery. ACHS FCA helps the homeless in Louisville By Andrew Reliford During the month of December, the Adair County High School FCA operated a clothing drive for Forgotten Louisville (homeless community). Hundreds of items of clothing were collected and 25 ziplock bags were filled with soap, chapstick, toothpaste and toothbrushes by the FCA. On Wednesday, December 19th, the clothing items were dropped off at a local outreach church that serves a large range of homeless people in the city of Louisville. Letter: Keep and preserve the Greensburg Street entry sign By Joyce Coomer . . . on Greensburg Road . . . yes, it is old. Yes it needs cleaned and repainted. And since it says "Chamber of Commerce" on it, one would assume that the chamber was the party responsible for the erection of this sign several years ago. While it's unsightly at the moment, it is a bit of local history that I feel needs to be preserved.
