My Friend Billy Grant By Tommy Bailey I was in my early teens and like everyone else I wanted to spend Saturday in Columbia and Billy would give me a ride to town. He would see me standing in the yard waiting on him. I could see him off in the distance coming closer in that big nice and shiny Buick and wearing that great smile as he pulled up. He was someone very special to me because of his kindness and warm smile. He will forever be in my memory. I pray we will meet again some day. LWC Graduates 411 at Winter Commencement Ceremony By Venus Popplewell Guests in attendance at Lindsey Wilson College's winter commencement ceremony on Saturday witnessed history in the making. The liberal arts college conferred its first doctorate degree in counselor education and supervision, the first Ph.D. to be awarded in the college's 115-year history. Leon Ellison of Cincinnati received a standing ovation from graduates and onlookers as he crossed the stage in Biggers Sports Center to become the first graduate of the Doctorate of Philosophy in Counselor Education & Supervision Program. "I can remember my first class. I was with all of these accomplished professors, some of them I had quoted in papers. And then there were the other seven members of my cohort who are very intelligent and I'm like, 'I don't know if I'm supposed to be here.' But it pushed me. I knew for me to get through this I would need to step it up and push harder," said Ellison. Ellison was among 411 individuals who were awarded undergraduate and graduate degrees as the first half of LWC's Class of 2019. Matt Bevin, the Kentucky General Assembly voted Tuesday night to end the surprise special legislative session Bevin called Monday afternoon to address the state's ailing public pension systems. In a passionate speech to the House of Representatives, Speaker Pro-Tempore David Osborne, R-Prospect, said the decision to go home without passing a bill reflected a lack of time and conflicting opinions among the Republican caucus about how exactly to change the pension systems. "We cannot shirk this, we cannot run from this. But this was not a problem that was created overnight ..." Osborne said. "We cannot solve it within the confines of a 5-day session."
