Court goes mobile to help homeless veterans

By Matthew Glowicki, Louisville Courier Journal

The cafeteria of the Salvation Army was abuzz. People moved through the room with trays of food in hand. Nearby, volunteers washed the feet of homeless men and women. Others sat and received a flu shot or an eye exam. It was the annual event for Louisville's homeless population that brought together the resources and help of dozens of organizations for a one-stop-shop experience, with medical care, housing aid and essential supplies.

Off in the corner, though, was something new. At a plastic folding table draped in a tablecloth, flanked by the flags of the United States and Kentucky, sat a man in a long black robe. Today, court was in session-- Jefferson District Judge Todd Hollenbach IV brought court to the people, and helped to resolve their low-level cases.

"These guys served our country. They have lost hope. They have lost faith in the system," said Shanna Davidson, veteran justice outreach specialist with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Louisville. "This is a way to show the veterans we're on the same team. We're coming to you. We're bringing a traditional court to a nontraditional setting. How comforting is that?"

New Castle official assaults his mother with a box

By Taylor Riley, Henry County Local

A New Castle city commissioner, elected earlier this month, was charged with assault last week at the La Grange Walmart. Charles Sevier, 49, was charged on Nov. 17 with assault, fourth degree with no visible injury after an incident involving his mother happened at the retail store in Oldham County.

Michael Thomas told police that he saw Sevier strike his mother with a box in his hand and tell her to "get her 75-year-old ass out of the aisle." Michael Thomas told the Local that he heard Sevier's mother say, "Don't hit me," and that's when he and his wife confronted Sevier.

Letter: Thank You to all in Adair who do a tough job

It's cold this morning -- 27 November 2018, as it was yesterday. Combined with a stiff breeze, being outside is somewhat irritating. Last Monday and Tuesday, it rained most of each day. Any way you look at it, any of those days were miserable weather in which to be working outdoors.

There is a group of hard-working people in this county who work year-round, rain or shine, summer and winter, and seldom, if ever, get the recognition they deserve.
