Board of Elections certifies results of the Nov. 6 General Election By Bradford Queen Frankfort, KY - The State Board of Elections on Tuesday certified vote totals from the Nov. 6 General Election and issued certificates of election to candidates who received the highest number of votes. The Board did not certify vote totals for the Constitutional Amendment commonly known as "Marsy's Law," which was on the ballot on Nov. 6. The Supreme Court of Kentucky will hear arguments regarding the amendment in February. Approximately 1.61 million Kentuckians, 47 percent of registered voters, cast ballots in the General Election, said Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky's chief election official. Kentucky's Medicaid overhaul approved By Darla Carter, Insider Louisville Kentucky's controversial overhaul of Medicaid has been approved by the federal government, the state Cabinet for Health and Family Services announced late Tuesday. The state's Section 1115 waiver, also known as Kentucky HEALTH, was initially approved by the Trump Administration in January but was sent back to the federal government for further review as a result of litigation. The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has now cleared the way for the program to begin as soon as April 1, according to a news release from the Cabinet. Kroger valuation case could have statewide impact Boyle County has been locked in a two million dollar dispute with Kroger over the valuation of Kroger's Danville store. After the Boyle County Board of Assessment Appeals and the Kentucky Claims Commission upheld Boyle's valuation, Kroger has taken the unusual step of escalating the fight to the Circuit Court. By Bobbie Curd, The Advocate-Messenger Property valuations might not sound like the most exciting thing to talk about. But attorney Stephen Dexter says "it's easy to get passionate about" a property valuation case concerning the Danville Kroger. It's a case that could have ramifications not just for all Boyle County property taxpayers, but for communities around Kentucky and the state budget, too, according to Dexter and other Boyle County officials. Burkesville winery wins Commissioner's Cup award By Sean Southard Burkesville's Up the Creek Winery won the Kentucky Commissioner's Cup award for Best Boutique Wine with their 2016 Burley Blend II earlier this month at the University of Kentucky Research Farm in Lexington. A record 182 wines were submitted for the competition. The wines were assessed by judges from Kentucky, Alabama, Missouri, and South Carolina. The Kentucky Commonwealth Commercial Wine Competition & Commissioner's Cup is held annually to promote Kentucky's grape and wine industry and to recognize the best wines produced in the state. ACHS Students Earn 1st & 3rd Place in Welding Contest By Nancy Taylor On Friday, November 16, 2018, Adair County High School Welding students traveled to Frankfort, Kentucky, and participated in the Capital City Welding Contest, sponsored by Tulsa Welding School. Senior Brandon Hagy won First Place as an individual, which earned him a full tuition scholarship in the amount of $17,500.00 for the nine (9) month program to Tulsa Welding School in Jacksonville, Florida. Lincoln Electric Company also awarded Brandon with various items of welding equipment such as a helmet, jacket, gloves, etc. Additionally, Brandon Hagy, Marcus Samuel and Braxton Coomer earned Third Place in the team event. Brandon Hagy (Senior) is the son of Shane Patterson and Dana Neat; Marcus Samuel (Senior) is the son of Mark and Robyn Samuel; and Braxton Coomer (Junior) is the son of Chris Coomer and Amberee Coomer. Mrs. Newell’s Class Donates Stockings Mrs. Newell's homeroom class at Adair County Elementary School donated stockings filled with toys they would want to receive if they were in the hospital during the holidays. The stockings will be going to Norton Children's Hospital through Kayla's Rising Above Childhood Cancer Fund. They also including handmade cards for the kids who will be receiving the stockings. The students received a copy of the book Kadee's Hope to have as a class gift for their donations. Kayla Garrison Jones spoke to the class on her long-term goals to become a nurse researcher in pediatric oncology. The message to the class was, "Whatever career you decide to do, find a way to help someone in need."
