CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - "Be thankful because you can make it," Dr. Nathl L. Moore, pastor of First African Baptist Church in Lexington, Ky. and the vice moderator of the General Association of Baptists in Kentucky, said as he opened Campbellsville University's Thanksgiving chapel.

"1 Peter is an epistle to persecuted Christians. Chapter 1, verses 3-6 tell us that in spite of all the trials you are going through you can make it with Jesus," Moore said.

Looking like Christmas at the Adair Fire Department

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sparks attended the Christmas Vendors Fair Saturday at the Columbia-Adair Fire Department. The weather was beautiful and a large crowd was in attendance with over 20 vendors participating. Mr. Sparks shared some interesting stories of when this truck was in operation. - JS

Grace Eastham, 93, Russell County, KY (1925-2018)

She was a homemaker and a member of Parks Ridge Church of God. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Holder.

Grace Eastham, 93, of Russell Springs, died Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at the Russell County Hospital. Her funeral service will be 2pmCT Friday, November 23, 2018 at the Bernard Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Billy Silverman officiating. Visitation will be from 11amCT Friday to funeral time. Interment will be in the Whittle Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Denny Holder, Kevin Kerr, Timothy Meirose, James Meirose, Paul Alan Jones and Jason Eastham.

Annual Christmas in Columbia Carnival will be at LWC

The Lindsey Wilson College Recreation, Tourism and Sport Management program and the Columbia Chamber of Commerce present the 8th annual Christmas Carnival featuring the Songs of Christmas on Saturday, December 1, 2018.

The Columbia community is invited to partake in the fun and games, including inflatables, Storybook Village, ornament and cookie decorating, and caroling. New and returning vendors alike will be set up to offer a variety of local goods.

Miller Park in Campbellsville will be filled with Christmas lights and music this evening. It opens at 5pmCT/6pmET across from the lake on Lebanon Avenue. Santa may also make an appearance.

Board of Elections certifies results of the Nov. 6 General Election

Frankfort, KY - The State Board of Elections on Tuesday certified vote totals from the Nov. 6 General Election and issued certificates of election to candidates who received the highest number of votes.

The Board did not certify vote totals for the Constitutional Amendment commonly known as "Marsy's Law," which was on the ballot on Nov. 6. The Supreme Court of Kentucky will hear arguments regarding the amendment in February.

Approximately 1.61 million Kentuckians, 47 percent of registered voters, cast ballots in the General Election, said Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky's chief election official.

Kentucky's Medicaid overhaul approved

Kentucky's controversial overhaul of Medicaid has been approved by the federal government, the state Cabinet for Health and Family Services announced late Tuesday.

The state's Section 1115 waiver, also known as Kentucky HEALTH, was initially approved by the Trump Administration in January but was sent back to the federal government for further review as a result of litigation. The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has now cleared the way for the program to begin as soon as April 1, according to a news release from the Cabinet.

Kroger valuation case could have statewide impact

Boyle County has been locked in a two million dollar dispute with Kroger over the valuation of Kroger's Danville store. After the Boyle County Board of Assessment Appeals and the Kentucky Claims Commission upheld Boyle's valuation, Kroger has taken the unusual step of escalating the fight to the Circuit Court.

Property valuations might not sound like the most exciting thing to talk about. But attorney Stephen Dexter says "it's easy to get passionate about" a property valuation case concerning the Danville Kroger. It's a case that could have ramifications not just for all Boyle County property taxpayers, but for communities around Kentucky and the state budget, too, according to Dexter and other Boyle County officials.

Burkesville winery wins Commissioner's Cup award

Burkesville's Up the Creek Winery won the Kentucky Commissioner's Cup award for Best Boutique Wine with their 2016 Burley Blend II earlier this month at the University of Kentucky Research Farm in Lexington.

A record 182 wines were submitted for the competition. The wines were assessed by judges from Kentucky, Alabama, Missouri, and South Carolina.

The Kentucky Commonwealth Commercial Wine Competition & Commissioner's Cup is held annually to promote Kentucky's grape and wine industry and to recognize the best wines produced in the state. Wines are judged blind, based on individual merit.

ACHS Students Earn 1st & 3rd Place in Welding Contest

On Friday, November 16, 2018, Adair County High School Welding students traveled to Frankfort, Kentucky, and participated in the Capital City Welding Contest, sponsored by Tulsa Welding School.

Senior Brandon Hagy won First Place as an individual, which earned him a full tuition scholarship in the amount of $17,500.00 for the nine (9) month program to Tulsa Welding School in Jacksonville, Florida. Lincoln Electric Company also awarded Brandon with various items of welding equipment such as a helmet, jacket, gloves, etc.

Additionally, Brandon Hagy, Marcus Samuel and Braxton Coomer earned Third Place in the team event.

Brandon Hagy (Senior) is the son of Shane Patterson and Dana Neat; Marcus Samuel (Senior) is the son of Mark and Robyn Samuel; and Braxton Coomer (Junior) is the son of Chris Coomer and Amberee Coomer. These students are instructed by Welding Teacher, Barney Taylor, at the ACHS Satellite Campus of Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center.

Mrs. Newell’s Class Donates Stockings

Mrs. Newell's homeroom class at Adair County Elementary School donated stockings filled with toys they would want to receive if they were in the hospital during the holidays. The stockings will be going to Norton Children's Hospital through Kayla's Rising Above Childhood Cancer Fund. They also including handmade cards for the kids who will be receiving the stockings.

The students received a copy of the book Kadee's Hope to have as a class gift for their donations.

Kayla Garrison Jones spoke to the class on her long-term goals to become a nurse researcher in pediatric oncology. The message to the class was, "Whatever career you decide to do, find a way to help someone in need." Kayla said, "It is so refreshing to see kids giving back during the holidays."

ACES annual Thankful for Our Veterans Program

Adair County Elementary School hosted their annual "Thankful for Our Veterans Program" on Tuesday, November 20, 2018. 5th grade students under the direction of Social Studies Teachers Angie Smith and Amanda Webster conducted this event.

The following 5th grade students were active participants in the program:
  • Abby Kemp offered the opening prayer
  • Kinzlee Akin made welcoming comments
  • Jenna Claywell sang the National Anthem
  • Kylie Redmon lead the Pledge of Allegiance
  • Natalie Bardin & Gabby Kemp presented a Storymaker Video
  • Katherine Lemmon, 5th grade poetry winner
  • Thomas Erler introduced the guest speaker
  • Remi Huckaby made closing remarks
  • Adrian Muse, Jaydon Jessie, Roberto Fuentes & Emma Berry were gift givers
  • Alexa Castrejon, Jaycee Keen, Sammie Jo Sandusky assisted
  • Maycee Hovious, Emma Bryant, Lily Neat were greeters
  • Josh Moss was the musical director
Mr. Levi Erler, father of ACES student Thomas Erler, was the guest speaker. Veterans were enlightened by songs from the 5th grade and the ACES student body.

ACES would like to also thank ROTC members from the Adair County High School for their participation in our program.
