Be Prepared to Stay Safe and Healthy in Cold Temps Cold weather poses increased risks for carbon monoxide poisoning, hypothermia, foodborne illness By Barbara Fox/Beth Fisher Frankfort, KY - As part of the year-long First 72 On You campaign, the Department for Public Health (DPH), within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS), is spotlighting cold weather preparedness efforts to remind Kentuckians of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, hypothermia and foodborne illness from possible power outages and cold weather conditions. "When temperatures drop significantly below normal such as during a cold spell or during a long-term power outage, staying warm and safe can become a challenge," said Jeffrey Howard Jr., M.D., DPH commissioner. "Carbon monoxide poisoning and hypothermia are deadly and should be taken seriously. We urge Kentuckians to take steps to prevent exposure to both cold temperatures and carbon monoxide by avoiding using alternative heating sources like propane heaters, gas-powered stoves and charcoal grills while indoors. It can be a matter of life or death." KY Afield Outdoors: Upcoming Waterfowl Season Cedar Creek Lake in Lincoln County, Barren River Lake in Allen and Barren counties and Green River Lake in Adair and Taylor counties offer some of the best waterfowl hunting in the central Kentucky region. By Lee McClellan Frankfort, KY - The first snippets of snow fell this week, making most people frown, but put a smile on the faces of Kentucky waterfowl hunters. The cold weather the week before the waterfowl season opener on Thanksgiving Day is a good sign. "Waterfowl hunting in Kentucky is nearly 100 percent weather dependent," said Wes Little, migratory bird biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "We will have more birds to hunt if we get cold weather to the north of Kentucky. If we continue with this cold weather, we should have a good opener." Little said fantastic habitat conditions for waterfowl await those birds. "The moist soil vegetation such as wild ryes, annual smartweeds, millets and sedges are looking great across the state. The habitat is here and population wise, we are living the glory days." Carol Perkins: Nothing like homemade Previous Column: Carol Perkins: Guy is a good sport By Carol Perkins "Nothing like homemade," is a compliment to the cook. Homemade is always preferable as long as the cook can cook! I have eaten some "homemade" items that hung in my throat, yelling, "Don't make me eat this!" I attempted this week to make several batches of homemade cookies to send to the grandchildren for Thanksgiving. I am not a cookie maker but having just watched the All American Cookie Bake Off for hours, I thought I could surely do this. "Look, Guy, those cookies aren't decorated any better than mine from last year," I proclaimed as the icing ran down the sides of the cookies. (That contestant was eliminated.)
