Lexington-based company works to offer KY-grown CBD products

By Susan Baniak, Business Lexington

It's been a tough homecoming for hemp cultivation in Kentucky. Hemp was once a staple crop of Kentucky agriculture, until it was deemed illegal in the 1930s because of its superficial similarity to marijuana. Bill and Adriane Polyniak and Dave Hendrick have been working alongside other hemp advocates to bring it back.

Kentucky Cannabis Company was one of the original six pilot projects awarded when the state legalized limited industrial hemp production in 2014, and their group was the first to legally possess hemp the same year, Bill Polyniak said. In addition, through the company's retail arm, Bluegrass Hemp Oil, they were the first in the state to bring a purchasable hemp CBD product to market.

KY Historical Society to give public look into Bible collection

By Chanda Veno, The State Journal

At a table tucked away on the top floor of the Kentucky History Center, Cheri Daniels, head of reference services, carefully unlocks two metal clasps holding together a 5-inch-thick family Bible published in 1741.

Written completely in Dutch, the VanArsdall Bible was lugged across the Atlantic Ocean by a family member and preserved for hundreds of years before ending up in the history center's massive collection of more than 200 Bibles.

In honor of National Family History Month in October, downtown Frankfort's Kentucky Historical Society is giving folks an opportunity to browse a few of its Bibles, many of which list family members or have obituaries glued to their pages.

KY AG sues Teva for illegal drug sales

Beshear's lawsuit claims Teva took steps to conceal its deceptive marketing and unlawful conduct by funding and working through unbranded marketing, third-party advocates and professional associations to promote opioid use.

By Terry Sebastian/Crystal Staley

Frankfort, KY - - Attorney General Andy Beshear today filed suit against Pennsylvania-based pharmaceutical manufacturer Teva for allegedly promoting its fentanyl-based cancer drugs for "off-label" use in Kentucky, which directly contributed to the state's addiction outbreak.

The lawsuit, filed in Fayette Circuit Court, claims Teva persuaded physicians to prescribe its drugs, Actiq and Fentora, to treat chronic pain despite the drugs being approved solely for breakthrough pain in cancer patients.

The lawsuit alleges Teva's salesforce was instructed to target doctors who were not oncologists, including general practitioners. In one instance, a sales representative alleges that 99 percent of the doctors in her territory were pain specialists not oncologists who wrote prescriptions for off-label use.

Frankfort, KY - Following a national search, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education unanimously selected Dr. Aaron Thompson as its fourth president. Thompson, who presently serves as the Council's executive vice president and chief academic officer, will transition to his new responsibilities Nov. 1.

He is the first Kentucky native and African-American to hold the position since the Council was formed 21 years ago. Thompson is passionate about sharing how education was a catalyst for his own success.

"As a native of Clay County, a son of an illiterate coal miner and a mother with only an eighth grade education, I am not only a first-generation college graduate, I am a first- generation high school graduate. Now, I am immensely fortunate to have an opportunity to represent that great opportunity to all citizens of Kentucky," he said.

Don't Let the Flu Catch Up With You

By Barbara Fox/Beth Fisher

Frankfort, KY - - The Department for Public Health (DPH), within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, is reminding Kentuckians to get vaccinated against the flu.

"Getting the flu can be debilitating and sometimes life-threatening," said Jeffrey Howard, M.D., commissioner of DPH. "Vaccination is the best tool we have to prevent the flu and it is also extremely important to take simple preventive steps to avoid the flu and other illnesses that tend to circulate at this time of year - wash your hands frequently, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and stay home when you're sick."

DPH officials report weekly influenza activity to the CDC as part of statewide flu surveillance efforts. The weekly report is located online at https://healthalerts.ky.gov/Pages/FluActivity.aspx, and will be updated by noon each Friday. Kentucky currently is reporting 28 laboratory-confirmed cases of flu and one influenza-related death. The state flu activity level is currently classified as "sporadic".

Letter: questions about placement of New Columbia street lights

By Victoria Pike

I was excited to hear that the Columbia City Council met October 18, 2018 to approve nine street lights for the streets of Patricia Trail, Corporate Drive, and Utility Way.

These are the streets leading to the new Whayne Supply on the backside of Holliday Place Development near Walmart. That being said. It's been well over a year that I asked for lighting along Burkesville Road around all our new development.

I applaud the council for seeing that the streets are going to be lighted up on the backside where the new business is, but we still need lighting along Burkesville Road to see where to turn off to get back to these businesses.
