Remembering Ed Waggener: A passion for journalism By Amy Pike I was very saddened to learn of the passing of Ed. He was a journalistic icon, a visionary, and a pillar of this community. I had the pleasure of speaking with Ed a few weeks ago and as always thoroughly enjoyed the conversation. He was a very intelligent man and could debate any topic or be the devil's advocate to provoke thoughts and comments from his readers. I often felt as if he nor Linda ever slept because they were always on top of any news story that related to Columbia both day and night. I visit the Columbia Magazine website numerous times a day and could always count on it being up to date with anything that was happening in our community. Ed's passion for journalism showed daily in his writings and news reports. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2018-09-27 11:28:42 | Comments | Printable version

Farm to School Month promotes local foods for KY students By Sean Southard Frankfort, KY - Serving local foods in Kentucky schools benefits the entire community, Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said in proclaiming October as Farm to School Month in Kentucky. "Eating healthy local foods helps Kentucky kids do their best," Commissioner Quarles said. "At the same time, when schools buy local, farmers and food businesses increase their sales, and that boosts the local economy. During Farm to School Month, let's celebrate our past success and commit to put more local foods on the plates of Kentucky school children in the future." The Farm to School program in the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) helps connect Kentucky school systems with local farmers and small businesses. Kentucky schools spent nearly $8.9 million on local food products in 2013-2014. More than 700 schools in 77 Kentucky school districts had programs in place to buy local Kentucky foods for their school cafeterias, according to the 2015 Farm to School Census compiled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Many students take part in planting school gardens, visiting farms, and turning the cafeteria into a classroom. Celebrating Chuseok at LWC By Sabine Eastham On September 25th, from 2-4pm, roughly 45+ students and community members gathered at 304 Lindsey Wilson Street (International Student Program House) for the first in a series of TED* (Transcontinental Educational Discussion) talks, to learn about, and celebrate Chuseok. What is Chuseok? Chuseok, or Autumn eve, as it is translated, is a major harvest festival and a three-day holiday in North Korea and South Korea celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar on the full moon. Like many other harvest festivals around the world, it is held around the autumn equinox. As a celebration of the good harvest, Koreans visit their ancestral hometowns and share a feast of Korean traditional food. After an informative slide-show on the holiday, attendees were able to sample homemade traditional Korean cuisine prepared by our Korean exchange students. On the menu, we were served japchae (a sweet and savory dish of stir-fried glass noodles and vegetables,) sanjeok (a skewered dish made with a large variety of meats, vegetables, egg-washed and pan fried), and Sikhye (a sweet Korean rice beverage, usually served as a dessert.) 2018-09-27 10:24:19 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Lindsey Wilson College
