Letter: Hurry home, Ed

George Kolbenschlag writes:
One of the greatest gifts Ed Waggener has given Adair County--and he's given many--is Columbia Magazine. There is no more convenient vehicle for us to publicly express ourselves than with our poetry, prose and photos in Columbia Magazine. The incredible array of our word and picture creations from comforting poems to photos of soothing sunsets and bright flowers help give us joy in the present and hope for the future. For many of us Columbia Magazine is our daily read to find out what's going on. What's to eat today? What's to do today? What are our neighbors are up to?

Castle & Key Distillery brings new life to Frankfort historic site

Four-plus-year renovation of legendary property results in tourism destination, promise of 100 new jobs

By Nicole Burton/Jack Mazurak

Frankfort, KY - At today's opening of Castle & Key Distillery, Gov. Matt Bevin congratulated the company's leaders on their $30 million renovation - a project expected to create 100 jobs in the coming years - and welcomed the public's return to the restored, long-dormant grounds of the former Old Taylor Distillery Co. in Woodford County.

"In the middle of an international resurgence of Kentucky's bourbon industry, we welcome Castle & Key as another crown jewel of spirits production, tourism and hospitality," Gov. Bevin said. "I commend the owners' vision to resurrect the historic property and their team's tremendous effort in renovating and preserving the buildings and grounds, creating jobs and, as of today, opening to the public."

Will Arvin and Wes Murry, founding partners of Castle & Key, bought the dilapidated property in 2014 and began an extensive historic renovation the same year. Work included creating a guest center in the original boiler room, installing new stills and rehabilitating the world's longest barrel warehouse. The team preserved the key-shaped peristyle springhouse, creek-fed well house and multiple other buildings and features. As well, they replanted the estate's sunken gardens and created a botanical walking trail on the 113-acre property.

First 72 On You: Emergency Preparedness for Seniors

Frankfort, KY - The Department for Public Health (DPH), within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS), has launched the First 72 On You information campaign during the month of September - National Preparedness Month (NPM), to increase emergency preparedness efforts for Kentuckians and their families. This week's spotlight is on preparing older adults for disasters and emergencies.

Older adults may be more vulnerable than younger adults during a disaster because they are more likely to have impaired physical mobility, decreased hearing and vision, chronic health conditions or social and economic limitations that may interfere with their ability to prepare for and respond to disasters.

Attendees should gather at the Adair Public Library, 307 Greensburg Street, Columbia, and then travel as a group to the cemetery where presenters will be positioned for their part in the evening's program. The entire program generally lasts about forty-five minutes to an hour, then back to the library for a reception.

The presenters this year and the characters they portray are:
