Wendy B. Burt: Loud night-time calls of Whip-Poor-Wills hypnotic Laments there are fewer and fewer of the birds due to due to forest fragmentation and development Wendy Butler Burt writes: According to most ornithologists, the steady decline in Whip-Poor-Will and the closely related Chuck-Will's-Widow, both native to South-Central Kentucky, have been in steady decline as a result of habitat loss caused by forest fragmentation and development. Even on our protected farm, we hear fewer and fewer of these birds each year. Both species are very shy and often flush at the slightest disturbance, but are difficult to see because they tend to sit on the ground or lengthwise on a branch. I think their loud night-time calls are hypnotic. --Wendy Butler BurtComments re article 99306 Blizzards of the 70s may have led to demise of whippoorwills 2018-09-02 19:39:06 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Birds of Kentucky

Blizzards of the 70's may have led to demise of whippoorwills That may have been when coyotes came across frozen rivers and began raiding groundnesting whippoorwills' nests. Click here for their call. Robert Cumming writes: Fifty years ago when I was a youngster living in the woods adjacent the shoreline at the mouth of Greasy Creek in Russell County, it was home to several whippoorwills. Every night each spring and summer they would get started fervently calling each other in the woods outside our screened porch to the point being almost annoying. Then came the blizzards in the 1970s when the Mississippi and Ohio rivers froze and wildlife biologists have suggested coyotes from out west crossed the rivers invading this country and decimating the ground nesting whipporwill populations. - Robert CummingComments re article 59824 Birds of KY Where have the whippoorwills gone 2018-09-02 14:32:53 | Comments | Printable version

The county schools -- Adair County High, Columbia Grade Center, Breeding Grade Center, and Knifley Grade Center -- were set open on September 7th. The new high school building, although not completed, was far enough along to have 12 usable classrooms, and, stated the paper, "All high school students in the county will attend the new school." The Breeding and Knifley centers were new, "an innovation in Adair County Education, and students will be transported there." (The five new buses ordered had not arrived, but unnamed alternate means had been secured to transport students who were not within walking distance.)
