Queen Anne's Lace and Chiggers (Or Lack Thereof)

Experience with chiggers and Queen Annes lace has been good; not so chiggers and blackberries. On the shapes of Queen Anne's lace blooms: Blooms of Queen Anne's lace will vary in shape and intricacy. Some will resemble a snowflake, some will be mostly flat, some will be slightly cupped and some will be domed.

By Joyce M. Coomer

I occasionally leave a few patches of Queen Anne's lace in the yard when I mow. Sometimes individual plants will get at least eight feet tall -- or look that way since they're a lot taller than I am and the blooms will be a foot or more out of my reach. (Several years ago Burpee's had Queen Anne's lace seeds for sale, touting that their seeds would grow plants more than six feet tall. Umm . . . tall Queen Anne's lace is like tall oak trees -- no one cut it down!)

There's a great article on The Bittersweet Southerner about a lesser-known Kentucky Original, Ollie's Trolley: He Could've Been a Colonel
The hamburgers at Ollie's Trolley are among the best in the world. With all that flavor, why aren't there Trolleys all over the South -- all over the nation, even? Maybe the world wasn't ready for a guy like Ollie Gleichenhaus.
If you go: The original Ollie's Trolley is still open at 978 S 3rd St, Louisville, KY, and is open 10amET-4:25pmET Monday through Friday, and closed on weekends. Service is carryout only.

Waiting again. Will I see the world differently after tomorrow?

Author Cass Irvin writes of waiting, again.

It's Sunday night (June 17, 2018) and I'm sitting here in my dining room as I often do watching the sunset change the colors of my neighborhood. Now that I'm retired I often hang out here in front of my window to the world. In 2008 Hurricane Ike took out our holly tree and opened up my vista so I can see more.

I'm also waiting for tomorrow when I get my eyes done (i.e., a cataract removed). I love saying it that way, as though I'm getting plastic surgery.

Mike Watson: QAL, Chiggers & a shower + trip to Dr. Loy's

A life lesson learned visiting the grandparents place in Southern Adair County in the olden days - 1980 or so - when Adair County Historian was the victim of one of Queen Ann Lace's most horrible habits - being a vehicle for chigger-to-human transfer. . .

Queen Anne's Lace - Lovely to look at, but I hesitate to touch!

My experiences with this beautiful wildflower, abundant in our part of the world, are that they often allow chiggers to hitch a ride on their way to a human.

Michael Potter: Wonders if poison hemlock also in QAL photo

Comments re photo 79449 Wildflowers of KY Todays Special Queen Anns Lace Michael Potter writes:
Only a possibility, however, I noticed the flower on the upper left and the flower just above the fence post on the right are flat; typical for wild carrot. However, the two in the center are dome shaped, typical of Conium maculatum (aka poison hemlock). Perhaps someone might want to take a closer look. There are specific characteristics for positive identification. --Michael Potter

Thanks Michael Potter - The two are often mistaken and you may be right. Thanks for pointing out the distinction. Almost all the identification guides point out the chance of mistaken identity in the case of these two plants, an important one, as QAL is a friendlier plant to humankind - in most instances - and poison hemlock is not. - EW

2018’s Most Patriotic States in America
Source: WalletHub

Expressions of American patriotism come in many forms — from setting off fireworks during Fourth of July and buying American-made goods to paying taxes and serving in the armed forces. But some states are better than others at showing their national pride. So in order to determine where Americans bleed the most red, white and blue, WalletHub compared the states across 13 key indicators of patriotism. Our data set ranges from share of enlisted military population to share of adults who voted in the 2016 presidential election to AmeriCorps volunteers per capita. - WalletHub
