Vonnie Kolbenschlag: The stone faces on courthouse columns And a happy coincidence, Columbus Stone, the talented sculptor, is the likely builder of the law offices for The Garnett's - Jr. and Sr. - the very same building where Columbia's current City Attorney, Dustin Warren is now located at 400 Public Square, Columbia, and where, Friday at 12pmNoonCT, there will be a ribbon cutting and Open House. Click on headline for complete story By Vonnie Kolbenschlag I believe the carved faces are of William Henry Hudson and his wife Mary. William H. Hudson was one of the contractors for the courthouse when it was built. He was also very active in establishing the county fair and gave 19 acres for the fairgrounds. Mary was involved, too, furnishing meals for the fair. The first fair in Columbia was held in 1884 - same year the historic courthouse was begun. On page 22 of the "Adair County Fair, 1884-1984" there is a photo of Hudson that looks very much like the carving on the column of the courthouse, most likely done by his partner, Columbus Stone, a mason and talented sculptor. AND, to his credit, I think, Stone gave recognition to Mary, Hudson's wife. Being a building contractor, it is likely he also built the now refurbished and looking wonderful building where our new city attorney Dustin Warner has offices. It was built for The James Garnetts - Jr. and Sr. They were attorneys in Columbia. James Garnett Jr. was state attorney general from 1913-1919 The younger Garnett also had a real estate office in this building. It has had many uses over the years. Old isn't obsolete - it's versatile! - Vonnie Kolbenschlag 2018-05-23 07:06:35 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History
