Jon Halsey comments on duties of the sheriff By Jon Halsey, Personal commentary Although the word "sheriff" does not appear in the Constitution, the Sheriff is the highest Constitutionally elected Law Enforcement official in the land. The Sheriff takes an oath to uphold the State Constitution and therefore he/she is the only safeguard between the citizens and unwarranted intrusion by the Federal Government. In modern times this duty has been eroded and nearly forgotten. Currently seven States are working to insure that the Constitutional concept of State Sovereignty is upheld by requiring all Federal Officials co-ordinate any arrests within the State with the local Sheriff of the jurisdiction involved. - Jon Halsey, Knifley, KY Comments re article 97429 Election 2018 Primary Question on duties of sheriff 2018-05-21 17:09:59 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary
Hand Turn Signals reminds writer of 'Hang a Left' By Joyce M. Curry Ralph's article in Just For A Smile News reminded me of an incident several years ago. A friend who had lived in a city for most of her life called and asked for directions to a place out in the country. After I gave her road names, right and left turns, landmarks, etc., I told her that at a certain spot she could "hang a left" and the place she was looking for was just down the road. She asked me to repeat that and since I thought she was writing down the directions, I went through the entire route explanation again. She then asked, "What is 'hang a left?' " - Joyce M. Election Day 2018 Civics Lesson: Alcohol sales not prohibited State law does not prohibit alcoholic beverage sales on election day. It's a matter of local option, and neither The City of Columbia nor Adair County Fiscal Court's ordinances prohibit sales on election day. By Shannon Sexton I've received several calls and texts about alcohol sales on Election Day. Could you please post a quick reminder... Per the Kentucky Dept. of Alcoholic Beverage Control, in 2013 the law changed to allow alcohol sales during the hours that the polls are open on primary, or regular, local option or special election day (KRS 244.290). However, the statute further stipulates that local governments may prohibit such sales. Adair Co. and City of Columbia do not prohibit sales on Election Day, per their respective ordinances. Thank you, Shannon Sexton, Adair County ABC Deputy Administrator 2018-05-21 10:53:35 | Comments | Printable version

The entire section runs several pages, including a lengthy "must perform" list incumbent upon all peace officers -- including sheriffs and their deputies -- in the state. It's fully referenced to the enabling pieces of legislation (KRS). lrc.ky.gov/lrcpubs/IB114.pdf "Sheriffs and three other types of elected county officials--coroners, jailers, and constables--are peace officers who possess law enforcement powers (KRS 446.010). "In addition to the instances [of arrest] cited above, certain peace officers, including sheriffs and full-time paid deputy sheriffs, may make warrantless arrests in some narrowly defined cases of domestic abuse, to include individuals dating, not only spouses and partners (KRS 431.005). "The law specifically authorizes sheriffs and constables to carry concealed deadly weapons when necessary for their protection in discharging their duties (KRS 527.020)." 2018-05-21 09:23:40 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary
