KY Afield Outdoors: Wade the Cumberland to beat summer heat

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - The dog days of late summer slow everything down. The heat and humidity along with the long days make outside work sweaty and arduous.

Fishing slows during the dog days as well. Catching game fish from a lake or stream during a 90-degree plus day provides a challenge that anglers often fail to conquer.

Wading the cold waters of the Cumberland River below Lake Cumberland makes the best bet for a successful day fishing with the added benefit of escaping the heat for a time. Any breeze scrapes cold air from the river's surface and makes the hottest day bearable, not to mention the oodles of brook, rainbow and bruiser brown trout.

Addiction -- how it began for a fourteen year old girl

This is the story of how an innocent 14-year-old girl stepped on a path that would take her from casual illegal drug use, through choices to try heavier drugs, and finally to falling into extreme addiction at age 22. Over those years, she says she lost her children, lost the trust of her family, lost her place in school that would have guaranteed her a solid career, lost herself. She is now 12 years sober (applause!!) as of this coming November, and she is speaking out about her journey to recovery in order to help others.

By Linda Waggener

At the fourth Adair County drug forum at Living by Faith Community Church, one former drug addict shared some of her story which shook those in attendance unfamiliar with the trauma a family goes through when a member is in the throes of addiction. But her testimony provided deep, caring comfort to those in attendance who were "afraid to go home" because of an unpredictable, addicted family member turned into a dishonest, erratic, dangerous person using illegal substances.

Billy Joe Fudge splains 'enforce' for Charles Marshburn

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Laws are general norms of behavior usually deemed necessary: (A) to at the very least remind us of our responsibility to treat others the way we would like to be treated and (B) by our elected officials "to compel observance of" those accepted norms by those who choose to ignore their responsibility to exercise the "Golden Rule". (C) Laws are a waste of the paper upon which they are recorded without negative ramifications for those who habitually violate these established norms at the peril of their fellow citizens, therefore requiring sagacious enforcement (the compelling of observance). - Billy Joe Fudge

Charles Marshburn: Who enforces law in Columbia???

Charles Marshburn writes:
Who is the individual ultimately responsible in Columbia for enforcing? - Charles Marshburn
Thanks - First, this advice. You need to get your farm annexed into Columbia, where you will be much happier and know so much more. Second, the first answer to your well defined question is, obviously, Columbia's highly acclaimed Chief of Police Jason Cross, who is at least Bro. Bobby Withers' second favorite son-in-law, and who is part of the leadership advocating for more crosswalks and greater pedestrian safety. Information beyond that is above my pay grade. I hope some of the betters can be of more help. - EW

Joyce Coomer - Thanks for the note. For many, the primary reason for wanting to make the Downtown safer, more attractive, and more inviting to pedestrians is that the economic impact for businesses there would be tremendous. I don't know of a single business which benefits when traffic speeds in a congested area is above 25 miles per hour. Thanks for pointing this out.- EW
