These Zinnias are guarding the garden on Guardian Street this week. They brighten the view from the community garden at Columbia United Methodist Church. Zinnias grow easily and bloom long in summer and are favorite borders for gardens. Comment: Lower speed to 15mph from 25mph, and enforce

Comment on Crosswalks:
I see pedestrians at legal crossings almost daily scurrying and in many cases in a run in their attempts to cross.

Additionally, the speed limit should be 15 MPH rather than 25, and enforced. -BJ Fudge

Lois Jean Helm, 59, Adair County, KY (1958-2017)

She was a former factory worker. She was a member of a large, respected Adair County, KY family. She was the daughter of the late Guidell Lee & Eloise Pickett Jeffries. She was a native of Louisville, KY, and a resident of Columbia, KY, at the time of her death. Her son, Coven Coffey, is among many left to carry on her legacy.

There is nothing better than fresh picked vegetables. That’s why we all love the Wednesday edition of the Farmers Market on the Square. Shop with us on the corner of Campbellsville and Merchant Streets, Columbia, KY. Here's a few of the items we'll have available until sold out:
Green beans, several varieties. Tomatoes including heritage tomatoes like: Cherokee Purple and Ponderosa Pink. Cucumbers for slicing and pickling. Yellow squash, zucchini and Eggplant. Red and white potatoes. Onions and peppers. Local honey. Angus Beef, free GMO-free chicken and farm fresh eggs. Fresh baked breads and muffins.
Produce at the Farmers Market on the Square is locally grown and picked fresh. The Farmers Market on the Square is open Wednesdays 1 - 6pmCT and Saturdays 8am - 1pmCT. The market, on the corner of Campbellsville and Merchant Streets in Columbia, KY, is across from the Columbia City Hall and next to the Adair County Judicial Center.

Chimney restoration work starts this morning Wed 26 Jul 2017

Cones will serve as protection for pedestrians and vehicles on the Burkesville Side of the Courthouse

Colonial Restoration will begin the repair work on the Adair County Courthouse chimneys today, Wednesday, July 26, 2017. Drivers please be cautious when driving around the Square; be alert as construction crew members will be working. While the work is being done it will be safe for traffic; however, a small area on the Burkesville Road side of the courthouse will be marked with cones to protect pedestrians and vehicles in the case of falling debris. - Andrea Waggener

RCIDA receives grant to fund retail feasibility study and workforce analysis

'This information is especially helpful considering Fruit of the Loom's departure from its Jamestown factory in 2015. At that time, Russell County was left with an excess of water and wastewater treatment capacity. RCIDA has since tried to capitalize on that excess by further developing its French Valley Business Park and obtaining its certification as a shovel-ready food and beverage site.' BENNY GARLIN, RCIDA Executive Director. Information obtained throught he grant will assist business recruitment and expansion efforts.

RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY (Tue 25 Jul 2017) — Business owners considering Russell County as a location will soon have important data they need to make an informed decision, and existing businesses will have more tools at their fingertips to help with expansion.

The Russell County Industrial Development Authority has received a $40,000 Rural Business Development Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture to support the completion of a retail feasibility study and workforce analysis to guide local business recruitment efforts.

She was a former hairdresser having owned and operated Mary's Beauty Salon. She loved working in her flower beds, was an avid reader and enjoyed baking for her friends and family. She was a native of Nelson County, KY, the daughter ofthe late Edward Martin & Edna Mae Perkins Martin. She was the widow of Randall VanCleave, her husband of 55 years. She leaves 10 direct living descendants.

Buttonbush! Wonderful native shrub, a beautiful bush that is very attractive to a wide variety of pollinators such as butterflies, honey bees, and many native bees. Native Americans used the leaves, roots & bark to treat a variety of ailments. Buttonbush belongs to the Madder family which includes coffee, quinine and gardenias (there are over 6000 members of the Madder family). - Wendy Butler Burt
