Taylor County Elementary School demolition - 25 Jul 2017

2017-07-25 - Lebanon Avenue, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, Manager, The Big Dawg, 99.9FM.
This FDR era building was a part of "the New Deal" and today is being demolished after the new Taylor County Intermediate School was constructed on Broadway and the new state of the art Taylor County High School was constructed on Highway 210 under Superintendent Roger Cook and Taylor County taxpayers. This property on Lebanon Ave will make way for the Green County Kentucky Tech School Satellite Campus. The property is owned by Taylor County Schools and will offer many people the opportunity to further their educational skills. This is another example of a county bursting with pride, along with our renovated Main Street and other efforts to beautify our county and city and attract quality jobs for our people. - LARRY SMITH, Gen. Writer: Onus of responsibility, vehicles v pedestrian, is on driver

Statute puts onus of responsibility on driver, says writer who has had narrow escapes on Columbia's Public Square cites Kentucky Statute protecting pedestrians which is much broader than many are aware

By 'Narrow Escapes on the Square'
Personal commentary

Paragraph four of section 189.570 of the KRS (Kentucky Revised Statutes) addresses, in plain, simple, language, the vehicle v pedestrian situation on Columbia's Square:
"(4) When traffic control signals are not in place or in operation the operator of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger."
Certainly, it is incumbent upon pedestrians to be alert, attentive, and vigilant when crossing a street, but when / where crosswalks exist, Kentucky law puts the onus of responsibility squarely on the driver. - Narrow escapes on the Square

Joyce Coomer: Puts onus of responsibility on pedestrians

'Crosswalks are not a solid barrier. The most careful of drivers can have an attention lapse or a sudden medical problem. A brand new vehicle can have unforeseen mechanical failure.' - Joyce Coomer. (Note: Joyce Coomer is right on shared responsibility. But nobody has said, to our knowledge, that well marked crosswalks are a 'physical' barrier, but they are sure working spendidly as psychological barriers. Nor has anyone else, that we've heard of, claimed that pedestrian responsibility for safety is mutually exclusive of having better signage, more responsibility for by drivers. - EW)

Chris Cato: Thanks to Sheriff Moss, ACSO for returned wallet

Chris S Cato writes:
A special thanks to Sheriff Harrison Moss for the safe return of my lost Wallet. I am not sure yet of the details of how it was found or who actually found it. I only know that I became aware that it was no longer in my possession after fueling up at Five-Star in Campbellsville and arriving in Columbia twenty minutes later. I assume I must have left it on the trunk or on top of the car. Since all I know at this point is that it was discovered on the side of North 55. Thanks again to Sheriff Moss and anyone else that contributed to its safe return. It certainly saved me a lot of hassle and heartache, by not having to replace it and it's contents. Sincerely, - Chris S. Cato
