Metcalfe County's Molly Faith Matney crowned Miss Kentucky

Molly Faith Matney, 20, a Western Kentucky University junior representing the Mammoth Cave Area, won the 2017 Miss Kentucky pageant tonight. A tearful Molly had not expected to win, but her Grandmother, Shirley Matney of Center, said she had no doubt. She says Molly is beautiful inside and out, just right for Miss Kentucky and Miss America as well. Molly is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Avery Matney of Center. She will represent Kentucky in the Miss America pageant this September. We send our heartfelt congratulations to Molly and her family! - LW

Frances Finn, 93, Adair Co., KY (1923-2017)

She was an exemplary Christian, a member of Pickett's Chapel United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was retired from Fruit of the Loom after 31 years and was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan. She was a member of a leading Portland Community family, the daughter of the late J.A. & Josie Rogers and the widow of Huston Finn. She leaves three direct living descendants.

Calvin Aaron, 89, Adair County, KY (1927-2017)

Calvin was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and had served as assistant Sunday school teacher in the adult Sunday School Class. He was a leading farmer, whose farm was always maintained in picture postcard perfection, and whose progressive practices were emulated by many others. He was a member of the Adair County Cattleman association and was a faithful member in the Adair County Gideon Camp. He was the son of the late Edd & Bonnie Hudson Aaron. His wife, Allene Collins, survives. He leaves four direct living descendants, spanning three generations.

Brenda Bardin, 72, Columbia, KY (1945-2017)

She was the matriarch of a highly regarded family. She was the daughter of the late John Elbert & Gladys Walker Brummett. She leaves ten direct living descendants, including a great grandson, expected in August, 2017. She was retired from Fruit of the Loom after 30+ years of service.

Chris Rowe is the son of Rita Rich Yates, late of Barnett's Creek and now living in Washington County, and of Billy Rowe, of Rowe Farms, Columbia, KY. He is the proud grandson of one well-known Adair Countian, Stanley Rich, and the proud uncle of another, William Rowe.

Jerry Lee Turner, 69, Columbia, KY (1947-2017)

Jerry was an active member of Purdy Separate Baptist Church for over 36 years, having served as youth leader, Sunday School teacher and Sunday School superintendent. He was a Kentucky-licensed blaster and had been employed by Scott & Ritter Company as a blaster and foreman for over 40 years. More than anything, Jerry enjoyed his family. His favorite pastime was watching his daughters, grandchildren and, more recently, his great-grandchild walk through the door.

FRANKFORT, KY. (30 Jun 2017) - As the current fiscal year ends, Attorney General Andy Beshear today announced that his office has returned nearly $8 million to the state's General Fund from a variety of civil settlements over the last 12 months.

Morene Brown, Casey County, KY native (1934-2017)

She was the daughter of the late Laura & Jim Allen of Liberty, KY. and the widow of Lilburn "Jim" Brown, her husband of 64 years. She loved good music and socializing with the many musicians she and Jim met through the years and, prior to her illness, looked forward to regular workouts at the YMCA in Colerain Township. Morene made a point to tell people that she fell in love with every job she had ever done. Those jobs included much, from early farm duties in Liberty, KY, then Muncie, Indiana to decades of factory and seamstress work around the Cincinnati area. She was a strong woman and steadfast example to her children and grandchildren and if you had a chance to listen, Morene could spin and share a good story from a colorful life. Her final resting place will be in Casey County, KY. She leaves 18 direct living descendants.

On Friday, June 30, 2017, at approximately 8:12pmCT Deputy Joey Keith was dispatched to a injury accident involving a car and a bicycle.

Daniel Spieker age 80 of Columbia was operating a 2014 KIA nine miles east of Columbia on East KY 80 when he failed to see a bicyclist traveling east bound. Spieker struck Jesse Lowery age 18, who was operating the bicycle.

She was a member of a widely respected Taylor County, KY family. She professed faith in Christ and was a member of Salem Baptist Church. She was a retired supervisor in the bookkeeping department at Taylor County Bank after 35 years of service. She was a native of Taylor County, KY, the daughter of the late Ray Russell Rice & Lora Richerson Rice. She was the widow of William H. "Skinny" Kirtley, her husband of 47 years. She leaves 12 direct living descendants.

Morgan Long earns GED diploma 55 years after leaving school

A major accomplishment, considering how schools have changed since 1962 - his last year in public schools, but he perservered. He's also thankful to those folks at the Adult Learning Center for pushing him and never giving up on him.

KY state real estate property tax remains same for 2017
