Calvin Claywell: The boundaries of Chance, Adair Co., KY

By Ed Waggener

In answer to a request, Calvin Claywell sent his definition of the limits of Chance, KY, with the Last Chance Store at its hub:
The Chance area, to my best (gestimated) knowledge would be Hwy 1952 continued on Chance road to 704 area, Jay Wheeler to Rock Lick Creek area, Walnut Grove road to 704 area, Charlie Morrison road to Harrods Fork Creek area. The Last Chance store would be the hub. Right or wrong??, that is my best guess. Hope this will be helpful. Last Chance store is quite a memorable place. CALVIN CLAYWELL.
Thanks Calvin Claywell: I agree wholeheartedly. We've never been able to clearly define so many Adair County places without challenges. Putman County and Burton Ridge come to mind. Defining boundaries for them usually end in heated debates. I like know these limits, and if there were anything to Fiscal Court, signs would be erected. And, for the record, if you are challenged to match wits, arm wrestle, or participate in a duel, we wish you luck. Adair County people get het up over serious issues like Chance. - EW

Mr. Halsey, FYI, Kentucky isn't even in the top ten of states with the largest population of active military personnel. This is article one on the council session, Monday, April 3, 2017
City jolted into reality on sidewalks. Mary Anne Loy obtains promise from Mayor Hardwick to take immediate action to improve safety for pedestrians. Mike Bell, from his motorized chair makes plea for change in priorities. "This city has a miserable track record when it comes to sidewalks." He challenged members of the Council to borrow his chair and ride from the Public Square to just past the curve at Greensburg and Rice Drive and experience the terrifying situation he experiences there and at other points in Columbia.

Mike Bell drove his motorized chair into the city Council meeting, Monday evening, April 3, 2017, at the invitation of Mary Ann Loy to speak on sidewalks. He said it doesn't matter so much with the city spends money on, as much as it matters what the city does not spend its money on. And sidewalks are not having the money spent on them that the citizens of Columbia need, especially disabled citizens of Columbia.

100 years ago today: the Fairday washer & the Delco-Light plant

'The timing of the April 4th ad in the News possibly was tied to another event in Columbia. Only had recent days had Mr. G.B. Smith, after a delay of several weeks not of his own making, finally gotten into operation the new electric plant, pulling Columbia out of the darkness into which it had been unwillingly plunged some three months earlier.' - JIM

An ad for a Fairday Twin Washer appeared in the Wednesday, April 4, 1917 edition of the Adair County News. (Note the name of the local agent shown in the image below.) This marvelous machine could be run either with electricity or with an engine powered by gasoline or other fuel.

The washer, manufactured by the well-known Fairbanks, Morse & Company (dba Fairbanks-Morse) had been on the market since at least 1916 and continued to be manufactured, with modifications and improvements, through at least 1938, when the advertising tag was "A Fairday washer makes every wash day a fairday for the modern housewife."
