JIM: To hell and back

By Jim

This appeared in the December 10, 1919 News as an aside in a lengthy piece about a recent trip to Campbellsville made by a Columbian foursome, J.O. Russell, Doc Walker, Daisy Hamlett and "the writer," (most likely, John Ed Murrell).

A mention in the article of the Buchanan-Lyon Co. of Campbellsville, an agent for the hot selling "Ford machine", led to the segue, "In this connection, here is a little story about the Ford:"

A minister was preaching and he took the occasion to speak of auto riding after night. He said "that the Ford car was sending more girls to h-ll than any other agency in the world."

Kentucky Color: I heard a tree

Click headline to access story with accompanying photo with poem

By Billy Joe Fudge

I think we all can learn lessons from the requests made in "I Heard A Tree" (poem with accompanying photo). Lessons from this Old Tree's life, lessons from his awareness of his mortality, lessons from his desire not to be just remembered, but to know that his life and death have amounted to something. He wants what we all want in our living and in our dying, to leave more than a blank spot or an eternal emptiness.

JIM: Culture & a library come to Columbia - 100 years ago

Columbia's Twentieth Century Self Culture Club was the talk of the town in 1916. It started the Columbia Library, which was archived in Dr. Triplett's dental office over what is now Reed Bros. Insurance Company. Not quite rivaling the library at Alexandria, Egypt, it could still boast of owning 93 books outright, a number which grew to 128 in 1919.

Columbia's Twentieth Century Self-Culture Club made the front page twice in the November 22nd 1916 News in an edition of the paper short on pages (four instead of eight) and "skase, mighty skase" on news.

One of the articles laid before the public the Club's plan to sponsor a parcel post sale and to "serve good eats" on the 23rd in [County Attorney] Gordon Montgomery's courthouse office, the monies raised to benefit the Columbia Library.
