Coffey to compete in National Championships this Saturday

By Matt Wurzburger

Lindsey Wilson's Nikki Coffey is set to compete this Saturday in the NAIA Cross Country National Championships at the North Farm Cross Country Course in Elsah, Illinois.

Coffey is the Blue Raiders' lone representative at this season's championship meet. The Danville, Kentucky native received an automatic bid as she was one of the top four placers at the Mid-South Conference Championships not on the winning team. Coffey placed fifth at the MSC Championships with a time of 18 minutes and 50.9 seconds - the second-fastest 5K time of her Lindsey Wilson career.

Remember food safety this holiday season

Poor Food Preparation and Storage Can Spoil Your Holiday Festivities

By Beth Fisher
Cabinet for Health and Family Services

Frankfort, KY - With the holiday season right around the corner, many people will be enjoying celebrations by entertaining friends and family, having parties and preparing feasts. From the buffet table to the office party, food becomes a focus of celebrations. The Department for Public Health (DPH), a part of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, wants the public to keep safe health practices in mind.

Many holiday dinners incorporate meat and poultry, possible sources of foodborne disease, a serious public health concern that is more common than many people assume. In fact, 1 in 6 Americans will get a foodborne illness this year.

"Great food is one of the many wonderful holiday traditions in Kentucky and we want everyone to enjoy food happily and safely this Thanksgiving," said CHFS Cabinet Secretary Vickie Yates Brown Glisson. "That is why we are reminding Kentuckians to be careful about purchasing and preparing food and to pay close attention to simple hygiene practices, like handwashing, food storage and clean-up. Following a few simple guidelines is all it takes to prevent foodborne illness."

The old blue-dye pot: domestic arts, Esto style, c. 1850

Once more JIM brings news from Esto, KY, a major anchor of the Sacred Triangle - Esto, Ono, and Sano. Esto, as all CM readers should know through the efforts of JIM to enlighten the masses on its rich heritage, has had major influence on Adair and Russell Counties; and yeah, beyond - across the Commonwealth, Boston, MA, and Western Kentucky University. This story reflects on the folkways of the people who inhabited the always gentrified little town 105 years ago, before it was a major air hub, before it became famed for golf courses, manufacturing, and fine dining.

Along with the swatches of cloth, "M.B" included a letter, to-wit:
