Principal Rich with Skylar Hare, student destined for big future

2016-11-17 - Adair County High School, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
Adair County Middle School Principal Alma Rich told the assembly for the November 17, 2016, regular meeting of the Adair County School Board that Skylar Hare, the ACMS sixth grader towering over her, did not dress up just to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. "He comes to school every day in this or similar attire," she said. "He announced that he wanted to 'dress for success'," she said, adding she had no doubt he would find it, as an elected official, a governor or perhaps a senator, "Maybe one day he will be President of the United States," she said. Skylar was accompanied to the event by his parents, Jennifer and Mike Cook, and younger brother Ethan. Hare's clear voice delivered the oath with the eloquence of a Speaker of the House, and drew a sustained round of applause. The new Speaker of the House and Adair County School Board Attorney Jeff Hoover was not present tonight; his role was filled by law partner Coleman Hurt. - Ed Waggener

Under a Memorandum of Understanding, the KDA's Division of Food Distribution collaborates with the Red Cross in Kentucky to support feeding of victims in shelters established by the Red Cross. Get Smart About Antibiotics

Drugs Can Have Dangerous Consequences if Not Taken Correctly

By Beth Fisher

Frankfort, KY - Antibiotics, common medications like penicillin, can be successfully used to treat a variety of illnesses caused by microorganisms that infect the body. However, - when used inappropriately these medications can have dire consequences.

"Antibiotics are the only drugs where use in one patient can impact the effectiveness in another patient," said Andrea Flinchum, a registered nurse and coordinator for the Kentucky Department for Public Health's Healthcare Associated Infection Prevention program. "They are wonderful tools in fighting bacterial or fungal infections - but prescribing them for viruses or taking them for illnesses they do not treat, can cause bacteria to become resistant to these drugs."

KY Afield Outdoors: Online survey improves HIP data

By Kevin Kelly

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky is drawing national attention after dramatically improving the accuracy of harvest and participation information collected from its waterfowl and migratory bird hunters.

The Harvest Information Program (HIP) provides state and federal biologists with data to generate reliable estimates of migratory bird hunter activity and harvest. The estimates are used to help shape season dates, bag limits and population management.

In the past, Kentucky's data left much to be desired. But a new report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service shows that requiring waterfowl and migratory bird hunters to fill out the HIP survey on the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources' website is having the desired effect.

Kentucky's data is better than ever. Because of its success, the state's system is being considered for implementation on a national level.

You can still submit Events for the Weekend - but . . .
. . . different priorities prevail. We'll do the best we can, but more attention, a higher priority, is given to those announcements for weekend events which arrive at least three days before the actual event. If you submit an event and it is not posted in two hours, in all likelihood there is a minor problem which can be addressed with a phone call - but additional emails only add to the problem.
