Letter: More on the Daniel Boone Tree

Boone portrayer and scholar Scott New thought the carving authentic

By Richard Phelps

On the subject of the Daniel Boone Tree at the Trabue Russelll House.

Chris Bennett's question regarding the tree. In the glass case is a newspaper article from about 1960 Adair Co. News. The farm where the tree was found was then owned by Richard Dohoney on Hwy 704 about 2 miles out 704; the farm was later owned by Estel Ballou in the later 60's: and is now owned by John Ballou.

November 1916: Elections, inducements, and elixirs

You may be suffering today from "that dull, listless, oppressed feeling due to impurities in your system, sluggish liver, [and] clogged intestines" 100 years ago, there was a cure for it, over the counter, no Rx needed, JIM has discovered in this fascinating digest of the news in Adair and nearby back then.

By JIM

Mid-November 1916 found Democrats in general and the Adair County News in particular still giddy with relief over President Wilson's razor thin re-election. (Had the Republican effort to turn then true-blue Kentucky to red succeeded, Wilson's opponent, Charles Hughes, would have lost the popular vote but carried the Electoral College by three, 267 - 264.) In heavily Republican Adair, Wilson won seven of 15 precincts, South Columbia was a virtual tie (98-100 Hughes), and the Republican candidate won the county by fewer than 200 votes of the over 3,500 cast.

Columbia Walmart & UCB 11 Nov 2016 VFW program big success

Event marked a time of historic transition in Adair County, KY, which, perhaps, made attendance imperative for many. It was the last time the Veterans Day program would be given at the Fairgrounds location. Next year, if all goes as planned, the VFW will be occupying a spacious, 5,000 s.f. post hall at 500 Greenhills Road, across Russell Creek, in Columbia, and the old hall, with so many memories, will be a thing of the past.

The 2016 Columbia Walmart Supercenter and United Citizens Bank Veteran's Program was one of the best attended ever.

Official totals have not yet been received, but a cursory count of the vehicles in the one time carnival midway, on the track, and in front of the soon-to-be replaced VFW Post 6097 building at 411 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY, indicated between 140-150 cars and trucks carried those to the event.
