2016 Walmart/UCB Veterans breakfast one of best attended

2016-11-12 - Former Adair Co. Fairground, 413 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
Inside the VFW, the blue building in the foreground, was what appeared to be one of the largest gatherings ever for the annual Columbia Super Walmart/United Citizens Bank breakfasts. The parking lot, and nearby parking areas had some 140-150 vehicles at the time this photo was taken. Mementos of the fairground are quickly being removed, with, here only one section of bleacher seating remaining. A new VFW Post 6097 is being built in a prominent location at 500 Green Hills Road. Commander Joe Hare expects the VFW to be able to occupy that facility by Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, 2017. - EW

End the week in one voice

It warmed my heart, and may warm yours, to revisit a healing song as this amazing week comes to a close in the USA, the classic, This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land. It was the fitting ending song this evening on A Prairie Home Companion, a live radio variety show hosted by musician and songwriter Chris Thile. PHC was created in 1974 in the fashion of The Grand Ole Opry by Garrison Keillor who retired earlier this year. In honor of our Veterans and our neighbors -- all 321,911,297 of us at this moment - Peace.

Thoughts on the Highway 704 Daniel Boone tree

Wants Daniel Boone carvings moved from Trabue Russell House to more secure location. Compares carvings on Adair tree and on stone in Frankfort with similar styles, as evidence that the Adair County carving attributed to Daniel Boone is authentic.

Click on headline for complete story with photo(s)

By Chris Bennett

It is my personal belief that the Daniel Boone tree carving is one of the most cherished historical artifacts that we have here in Adair County. It really made me feel sad to see it depicted in such a way to bring doubt to its authenticity. I think it should be protected and displayed in a more fitting manner. Instead of making outlandish conjecture on why it is not real we should actually tell details about the tree, such as where the trees stood etc. the year and reason it it was cut down and possibly who cut the tree. The first written account of the tree, and other written accounts would also be valuable information.

Thanks. Delbert - Not privy to that information yet. But the apartments do appear to drawing a great deal of interest. I did hear a figure, but it wasn't for publication; it did seem very affordable for the size and location of the Begley Apartments.- EW

About 20 years ago I read a book titled Boone, A Biography by Robert Morgan. The book cover blurb states that this book reveals the complex character of a frontiersman whose heroic life was far stranger and more fascinating than the myths that surround him. The author states that particular events define a life that became a legend. The review of the book states that . . . (Boone) has been an American icon for more than two hundred years . . .
