Board officially establishes ROTC program at Adair County High School; officially approves ROTC instructor position. Program will be in place when school starts August 11, 2016. Program expected to be a hit with both young women and young men.

By Ed Waggener

The meeting took three times as long as predicted - 15 minutes instead of 5 - but the Adair County School Board made it official: There will be a Junior ROTC program at Adair County High School when students return to to classes next week on August 11, 2016.

The unanimous board approval came at the 5pmCT, Special Called Meeting on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, on a motion by Quinn Lasley (Div 2), a second by Lisa Burton (Div 3), with Terry Harvey (Div 1), and Chairman Floyd Burton (Div 4), joining in the the 5-0 vote.

Remembering Marilyn Owens & RSHS classmate, Lewis Owens

Their beautiful romance spanned fifty-three years, two months, and one day

Special to ColumbiaMagazine.com

Marilyn Ann Owens, nee Hammond, was a member of the Russell Springs High class of 1949. Her "Senior Silhouette," written by classmate Lilly Meadows, stated in part,
"The charming and striking senior of this week is Marilyn Ann Hammond. She has black hair [and has] great big shining eyes...and is only 18 years old. Marilyn is one of those happy, care-free girls who is always having fun. She especially likes a certain senior of '48 (her fiance, Lewis Owens), basketball, music and all sports. Her favorite colors are green and white (the colors of Russell Springs High)...Whatever you do Marilyn, we wish you much happiness always." (Russell County News, May 5, 1949.)
Marilyn and Lewis were engaged in September 1948 and married on Sunday, June 18, 1950 - Marilyn's 18th birthday - in Pikeville, KY, where Lewis worked as Engineer at radio station WPKE. Their wedding announcement, published in the June 29, 1950 edition of the Russell County News, stated that "The bride wore a blue dress with white accessories and a corsage of red roses. The groom wore a grey suit. Their only attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith, of Pikeville...The many friends of Marilyn and Lewis wish for them all the happiness in the world."

Lewis died in summer of 2003, fifty-three years, two months, and one day after their marriage.

Personal commentary

Often times people are quick to write a letter to the local paper or social media to express their dissatisfaction over something they are unhappy with, but are not as quick to express their opinion when someone is doing a great job.

I would like to take the opportunity to applaud Alan Reed, Superintendent of Adair County Schools, and the school board on their foresight and hard work on developing an ROTC program for the students in Adair County!

Sharon Wheeler: Junas Goodin was wonderful man

Recalls Sunday after church visits to his place and good times at the Cross Roads and the stone marbles Junas Goodin made.

Sharon Wheeler writes:
Junas Goodin was a wonderful Man. He was my Aunt Mary Ellen Dillingham's father. We used to go there a lot on Sundays after Church to visit them. I loved going there. He had a big strawberry field out behind his house. Loved to go and pick strawberries. Aunt Rosie was a wonderful cook as well as Aunt Mary Ellen. Loved my cousins Harold and Nathan. I loved looking at the marbles. i have a jar of old stone marbles we used to play marbles at Coburg. It was a thing to do back in those days. I used to know all the folks up and down that Cross Roads lane . It sure has changed a lot: more homes and the old Junas house is gone and Aunt Mary Ellens house is all redone. My dad was Leonard Dillingham. I have a lot of memories from the Cross Roads. --Sharon Wheeler

Carol Perkins: Triumph in 2 day ordeal with dragon

Late one night as I was binge watching "Reign" on Netflix, I heard a rustling sound coming from the kitchen.

Usually, I brush off sounds without fretting about the source, but this was too loud to ignore. I walked around the kitchen, looking but hoping not to find anything too large to conquer. When I didn't find a source for the noise, I went back to the TV and my recliner. Then I heard it again.

Don Neat unfolds start of wonderful memories of Junas Goodin, marble maker

Comments re article 84729 Monroe Countian receives grant to pass on marble making skills Don Neat writes:
I'm curious, what are traditional marbles? One of my mentors in the early 60's was Junas Goodin. He was an elderly gentleman and friend who taught me how to make stone marbles using a small moving stream, stones (rocks), two boards, hammer and nails. I still have large and small stone marbles we made. Would love to show them to you and explain the procedure. I also helped him make a marble yard to play on. As a young boy, I had the privilege to spend many, many hours with Junas, my nearest neighbor. He left me many fond memories. Don Neat - Don Neat
Thanks, Don Neat - We can't wait to learn more about Junas Goodin, see the photos, and learn more about the technique of making marbles. As for the definition of "traditional marbles," I'm shamed to admit more ignorance than I ought, having visited Moss, TN, and Tompkinsville, KY, many times. One arrives at that state of ignorance by having one's mind more on stateline barbecue than culture. - EW

John Chowning: Most issues of day solved at Rosenbaum Store

By John Chowning writes
Thanks to Dave Rosenbaum for sharing about his family's Adair County heritage and his father's birthday. His parents were very fine people - my parents had tremendous respect and appreciation for the Rosenbaum's. As I was growing up on our family farm a few miles south of Fairplay - "down on Crocus Creek" - we enjoyed frequent visits to the general store owned by Mr. Stanley. And most of the issues of the day were solved by the good folks who gathered there. In fact, I'm confident that the opinions and solutions of those who gathered at the Fairplay store were more substantive and grounded in common sense than what we hear coming from today's politicians! I'm grateful for the good memories. - John Chowning
