FRANKFORT, KY (Tue 7 Jun 2016) - Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has shut down a moonshine still operation discovered on Spout Springs Road in Estill County.

Agents seized the moonshine still, 12 - one gallon containers of moonshine, a bag of empty jugs, a record book and a small amount of marijuana.

He was construction worker and member of the Grove Ridge Baptist Church.

Charlie Watson passed away Monday, June 6, 2016 at his home in Casey County, KY. He was 59.

Columbia United Methodist Church getting new pastor

Columbia United Methodist Church, 202 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY is in the midst of bidding farewell to its pastor of the last seven years, Rev. Neil Janes, and welcoming new pastor Rev. John Wesley Hatton who has been serving Mayo United Methodist Church in Paintsville, KY.

Rev. Janes, his wife Hope and their daughters Addison, 7, and and Stella, 5, are being moved to Memorial United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, KY. Rev. Hatton, his Wife Julie and their son Emory will be moving to Columbia.

My butterfly garden is a wild tangle of blackberries just at the end of their blooming period, daisies and black-eyed Susans scattered hither and yon, and a good crop of butterfly weed just now coming into bloom. The Queen Anne's lace is delightful and there are wildflowers blooming that I cannot identify. Goldenrod is thriving and there are several varieties of grasses blooming and seeding.

City of Columbia finances show solid improvement

General Fund balance is up over $400,000 from beginning fiscal year estimate

The City Council received encouraging news from City Clerk Rhonda Loy, who said in last night's regular meeting on June 6, 2016, that the financial situation is the best she can remember in a long time.

in most, but not all funds, there were substantial increases in estimated balances for the year. Increases from estimates were up in these funds:
  • General Fund estimated EOY balance up from $395,159. to $828,520.
  • Utilities estimated EOY balance up from $2,559,349.00 to $2,577,214.00
  • Estimates were the same for:
  • Municipal Aid Fund - $133,169.00
  • LGEA Fund - $34,925.00
  • Payroll Tax - $1,000.00
  • Estimates were down for ending balance for:
  • Garbage Fund - down from estimated $293,938.00 to $169,953.00
No estimate yet on ABC income

Mayor Hardwick said that the City is unable to estimate how much revenue will be made through taxes on Alcoholic Beverage Sales in Columbia, which are expected to begin later this month.

Grants available for spay/neuter activities

Kentucky county and metro governments may apply until July 15

FRANKFORT, KY (7 Jun 2016) -- The Kentucky Animal Control Advisory Board invites county and metro governments in Kentucky to apply for matching grants for spay and neuter activities for 2016.

Governments may partner with non-profit organizations to obtain the best use of resources. Funds are extremely limited, and $1,000 is the maximum that can be matched. Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis, with favor shown to applicants that provide the highest amount of matching dollars.

Mary Anne Loy Sidewalk Report warmly received by City Council

Mary Anne Loy is hopeful that Town-to-School Sidewalk can be completed by start of School in August of 2016. Lindsey Wilson Main Campus to Sports Park Sidewalk project is moving again, she reports. Other projects in longterm plan include Tutt Street, Walker Street or Mitchell Street, Dillon Street, Burkesville Street, Sidewalk to serve pedestrians leaving Rice Addition. Greensburg Street from Walker Street to Good Shepherd Church, and Hurt Street, Bomar Heights, and West Frazier Street.

With hopes that the long overdue Public Square to the Adair County School Campus could be a reality before the opening of schools in the fall, and that the Lindsey Wilson Main Campus to its Sports Park will start soon, Mary Anne Loy, chair of the Sidewalk Committee appointed by Mayor Curtis Hardwick, delivered a comprehensive plan for sidewalks which was enthusiastically received by the City Council at it's regular June 6, 2016 meeting.

The report focused on three topics: 1) Lindsey Wilson Sidewalk update 2) Greensburg Street Sidewalk-to-Schools, and 3) Future or long range sidewalk planning for Columbia.
