Best Pawpaws when Hunter was lad were at the Gilpins Hunter Durham writes: When I was a young boy (1951), the greatest Pawpaws were at the home of Lawrence and Ella Gilpin. They lived about a mile down behind Antioch Church on KY 61. They had about 20 trees in the yard between their home and the rock road. They tasted good and in summer and ripe they had a banana smell. - HUNTER DURHAMAbout: JIM: The Battle of the pawpaws, ca 1870 by JIM 2015-04-12 16:07:13 | Comments | Printable version

JIM: The Battle of the pawpaws, ca 1870 It happened in Adair County, KY. A teaching career was the most serious casualty. JIM has undercovered, added segues and profound and funny illuminations, on the writings of Dr. U.L. Taylor, who wrote "Early History of Melvin White" is serialized episodes, about the a colorful Adair Countian they ought to make a movie about, Melvin White, or maybe about the PawPaw battle which occurred in 1870 in the Tabor Commmunity of Adair County. Families of Jim Taylor, Allen Pile, Lucian Hurt, Rollin Hurt, Bascom Garnett and Jo Nat Conover will take great pride in the military manner with which the gallants conduct themselves Click on headline for complete story By JIM The recent photo and discussion on ColumbiaMagazine about pawpaws stirred this dullard's curiosity enough to scour the dusty, musty pages of the News for historical references to that fragrant fruit. The search led to the discovery of a jaw-dropping account of Adair County's least known battle--a battle precipitated by the fragrant fruit of what perhaps was the primest Pawpaw patch in the land. What follows is considerably longer than a sound byte. It's more like a seven course meal served with a generous helping of lassitude. However, every word and syllable and turn of a phrase has been weighed in the balance and found necessary for the telling of a good tale. Schoolmaster Hooker, Commander-in-Chief Melvin White & Co., and the Battle of the Pawpaws (c. 1870) Melvin White, a native of the Auld Sod of Adair, introduced himself to family, friends, and neighbors in the 1850s, some four or five years before the onset of the Civil War. Charles Marshburn: The Scientist and the election? Written in response to Dr. Ben Arnold essay, which we titled: "A scientist looks at Pawpaw culture" posted 12 Apr 2015. Charles Marshburn writes: Does the scientist have any word on the results of the last election? He sure does have a lot of patience! - Charles MarshburnYes, we all do. But isn't it better that Judge Vance get it right and do it early? A late Friday check at the Adair County Court Clerk's office found that the ruling on the Tuesday, November 4, 2014 Mayoral Election had not yet reached the Clerk's office. The question bears on serious issue, trust in the electoral process - basic to our democracy. Not at all on personalities, we patiently believe. - CM 2015-04-12 08:25:15 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Dr. Ben Arnold: A scientist looks at Pawpaw culture Another look at the "Kentucky Banana" by experts. This treatise follows another scholarly look at the prized native fruit by Historian Mike Watson. (Comments re article 74496 Mike Watson On Pawpaw vs Papaw) There is a latent commercial potential for the beautiful tree with the distinctively spicy pulp. Dr. Arnold asks, 'Wouldn't it be great for Adair County to be the first to commercialize pawpaw extracts and develop pawpaw farms?" Click on headline for complete essay, with compelling concepts most of us never knew: That it's foliage is a natural insecticide - except for the beautiful Zebra butterfly. That some people are allergic to the fruit, and why. By Ben Arnold The pawpaw is indeed a very interesting fruit and plant and Kentucky is in the center of the optimum region for growing them. The chemistry and story of the pawpaw is much too complex and lengthy to present here but a few facts may be of interest to your readers. The American Indians and early settlers enjoyed and counted on the fruit for a reliable food source. The fruit contains more nutrients than most of our common fruit, including large quantities of vitamins C, B1 and B2 and many minerals. Where is stake for geographical center of Adair? In response to: The COF clearifies center of Adair County mystery Charles Marshburn writes: In all fairness to myself, I did ask the geographical center of Adair County. I just want to know where the survey stake is located. Charles MarshburnMr. Marshburn - The great thinkers are apparently still thinking about it. One party is already thinking about an app, "Center of Everywhere," which would call up any legally defined boundaries, and have the geographic center instantly determined. Of course that is very likely already done. Your answer may come with a wall map, pins and strings and theorizing. Tough one. - CM 2015-04-12 03:11:44 | Comments | Printable version
