Commentary: Altering streams usually makes matters worse

'It's important to note that, often, when people attempt to alter creek beds on their property, those actions may have numerous negative effects on both their upstream and downstream neighbors . . . Today, in Adair County, obsolete land use/soil conservation practices, including poor timbering, plowing steep hillsides, overgrazing, and removing trees and vegetation from stream banks -- all exacerbate the problems in our creeks- WENDY BURT

By Wendy Burt
Personal commentary

In the late 1970s, I clearly remember an attempt to fix some gravel "problems" on Harrods Fork that ran through my mother's southern Adair County farm. The "fix" lasted about a nanosecond and, ultimately, made matters much, much worse along a longer section of the creek

Marsha Walker cites roadway drop-offs in Columbia, KY.

Bypass is 2 miles longer than directly through town, she says. (And raises an an obvious question without mentioning: Should sides of road be marked with paint?)

By Marsha Walker
Personal Commentary

The drop-off I most fear in town is the curve just off Burkesville Street on Bomar Heights. It could really damage a car and injure passengers. At night it is difficult to see. There is also a bad drop-off near the water tower on Bomar Hgts. as you turn off onto the street that leads to Tutt Street.

I appreciate all the bypass suggestions. It is two miles further from our home to Hwy. 55 N than using Burkesville St., but I think it's a big help the school buses. - Marsha Walker

Joyce Coomer: Agrees with Billy Joe Fudge, James Roberts

1) Drivers have become too complacent. 2) She, too, bypasses the bypass

By Joyce M. Coomer
Personal commentary

Billy Joe is correct . . . drivers have become too complacent about being aware of what is around them while cruising down the road. And, for some reason, I thought the GPS doohickeys notified drivers of intersections ahead . . .

I also agree with James Roberts -- avoid the bypass when you can . . . I sure do! I've driven the length of it only twice -- once Loretta wanted to see where it went and as I hadn't yet been around it, we toured it. The other time, Greg and I were measuring the difference in the distance to our house around the bypass or to the square -- it's much closer for us to go to the square and up Jamestown Hill on our way home from Dollar General on 55. - Joyce M. Coomer

Creek Gravel and the government

Would some county roads be more economically maintained creek gravel? Creek gravel is the surface of necessity for many without funds - and also by the monied country gentry who prefer the many advantages of living on a country lane which looks like a country lane.
Click on headline for complete commentary with photo(s)

By Ed Waggener

Some folks like the comforting site of creek gravel for country homes and church yards. But finding it has been a problem. Some 10 years back, I wanted a few loads for a parking lot, but was told the nearest place to buy was south of Scottsville, KY, for a gravel pit which had quite an operation. I finally settled for limestone, because of the time for a trip to Scottsville and because the expense for transport seemed to much.

The word I got at the time was was that the government would allow it harvesting gravel from streams. This past week, I've been told that the rule is that the equipment can't get in the stream. The wisdom was that a Trackhoe, positioned out of the stream on a bank, could harvest gravel legally.

Rickie Williams: On highway safety, progress & steps backward

Writer remembers how the third brake light reduced his father's body shop business in Arkansas. But his dad has found that texting while driving has more than made up for it. He writes: 'Mr Fudge is correct. Folks today are so spoiled with their toys and deem them so "necessary" that many are losing their lives as a result. Is that text message or that phone call really THAT important?' - RICKIE WILLIAMS

I think that Mr Fudge has done an excellent job of assessing the situation.

In 1986 it became a Federal mandate that all vehicles sold in America be equipped with a CHMSL...know to us commonly as the third brake light.

My dad in Arkansas has operated an auto body shop and wrecker service since 1962. Once in the early 1990's I was reading one of his trade magazines and found an article stating that the third brake light had severely lowered the number of rear end collisions.

Mike Watson: Spring . . . and Wild Onion and the like

Memory of a day at Mr. Fred Pickerell's store, Gadberry, KY, and the mysterious odor Mr. Pickerell could not identify which he thought was spoilage in his produce department
Click on headline for complete anecdote

By Mike Watson

The coming of Spring brings to mind an old story. When I was a young sprout, likely the late 1960s or very early 1970s, there was an occasion when, along with either our Dad, Carl Watson, or uncle, Roy Bunch, or both, I was witness to a scene at Mr. Fred Pickerell's store, which was located at Gadberry.

It was a lazy spring day and several men were gathered at the store, including Mr. Monty Gadberry, Joe Gadberry, Paul Frankum and Carl Turner.

Ruling still awaited on Mayoral contest

The ruling on the contest Mayoral Election has not been delivered yet, a check at the Adair County Circuit Clerk's office according to information at the office late last week.

Both sides are hopeful that what must be a very carefully considered decision by Judge Judy Vance will come soon.

For Mayor Curtis Hardwick, a ruling would eliminate an area of concern about his administration's future.

Ben Arnold wants a decision soon to know whether an appeal will be necessary if his request for a new election is not granted.

We'll keep you posted. - EW

Billy Joe Fudge: Spare the rod, spoil the child commentary

'I want you to consider the spirit of the "spare the rod, spoil the child" saying concerning the tragedies on our bypass intersections,' Billy Joe Fudge writes as he considers how we've lost the need for self discipline and attention by some of the well meaning convenience and safety innovations which seems to have added more, not less peril

Personal Commentary

We've all heard it said, "spare the rod, spoil the child". Now we all have the definition pretty well ironed out but I'm gonna put a little different spin on it.

"Spare the rod" of course implies that those who do not require discipline in the lives of children for which they are responsible are doing them (the children) a great disservice.
