Song ran through COF's head this morning

COF writes:
Don't quite ken the Why of it but the following lines were running thru my head when I woke this morning:
"Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright; The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light, And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout; But there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out."

Carol Perkins: Tis the season - for allergies

Allergies. Tis the season and I have not escaped. How does one cope with allergies so as not to annoy those around us when we clear our throats and hark? Impossible. - CAROL PERKINS
Next Earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Setting Sail

By Carol Perkins

"Don't you think you need to go to the doctor?" Guy asked as he listened to my rattling, wheezing, and harking. I had become used to myself by then. "I'm sure I need to go, but I don't have time."

"Let me understand this. You don't have TIME to go to the doctor as you are about to embark on a week long trip with a group of women who will surely get fed up with your throat clearing?" He had a point.

By Peg Schaeffer

I was contacted by a woman whose sister had terminal cancer. The sister had three dogs that she loved very much and they had heard about Sugarfoot Farm Rescue. She asked if we could take in the dogs. I don't normally like to take in this many dogs at one time but considering the circumstances and the fact that the dogs were friends I agreed to take them. She did mention that one of the dogs was 15 years old and they thought they might have the dog euthanized rather than have her face the stress of leaving her lifetime owner and adjusting to a new home at her age.

Tom Chaney: Where Do We Go From Here?

Of Writers And Their Books: Where Do We Go From Here? Sociology and Compassion. Tom tells of the young people he interviewed to work in The Bookstore when it was also a restaurant. Many were high school dropouts who had been bullied and were willing to sacrifice their education to escape the abuse of their peers as well as that of the educational system within which they found themselves. This column first appeared 4 April 2010.

Where Do We Go From Here?
Sociology and Compassion

Once, during my shortish college teaching career, I had a magnificent colleague in the history department of one school who gave short shrift to the field of sociology and to the adherents and practitioners thereof.

He once defined a sociologist for me as "one who stands in constant amazement at the perfectly obvious." Experience has proven that to be true over and over.
