Jon Halsey: Says Federal study parts from Colorado State HD study

Among the study's findings: "you are twice as likely to get into an accident while driving on marijuana and even more at risk when you mix alcohol with it." - JON HALSEY

Jon Halsey writes:
To me, the most interesting facet of this Federal study is how it parts from a new comprehensive Colorado State Health Department study that raises serious concerns about the negative effects of marijuana on the brains of adolescents and young adults. Among the study's findings: "you are twice as likely to get into an accident while driving on marijuana and even more at risk when you mix alcohol with it."

A simple on line search for Colorado State study on effects of marijuana should lead to the paper.

By Carol Perkins

Whoever came up with the idea for a car wash was a genius. You pull your vehicle up, put in your money, and aim for the track that guides your vehicle ever so slowly through until the light comes on indicating you are finished. Sure takes the pain out of the hours of scrubbing, soaping, and rinsing I used to do when I was a teenager and found joy in washing my own car.

Happy Tail: I See Spots!, the story of Ralph & Libby

Ralph & Libby were Dalmatians friends had gotten for Christmas. When the friends moved from Connecticut to Florida, there was no place for Ralph and Libby. Naturally, Peg Schaffer took them in, and brought them to Kentucky, which became their old eternal home. They were quite a pair, as this touching tale reveals. Ralph, was a father, the progenitor of a mixed breed Peg dubbed "Beaglematian."

By Peg Schaeffer

I had two friends in Connecticut, Timmy and Joyce, who lived not far from us. They had a small farm and had gotten two Dalmatian pups one year for Christmas. They named them Ralph and Libby. They loved the two dogs and the following year they were on their Christmas cards. Whenever I'd go to visit Timmy and Joyce, Ralph and Libby would greet me. Libby was the quiet one of the two and would trot out to welcome you with a slow wag of her tail. Ralph would bound up to you, leap on you, and slobber you with kisses.

Greensburg & Jamestown Streets once Main Street in Columbia

Columbia's "Market Street" now Campbellsville and Burkesville Streets

Mike Watson writes:
Columbia's Main Street, which was in the original town plan, was present Jamestown and Greensburg Streets. The name of Main and Market, which was also an original street, now Burkesville and Campbellsville Streets, were renamed about a quarter century later, upon use of different "important" routes to nearby towns.

Main was so named, heading toward Greensburg, because Greensburg was the seat of Green, the parent county of Adair, and the original settlers of the village that came to be Columbia had to travel to Greensburg for any legal business and for additional trading.

There is much old history in this town and county. - MW

Ed Pipalski: Riprapping project a waste taxpayer resources

Ed Pipalski writes:
Didn't the utilities district just complete a shoreline embankment/flood prevention improvement project to preserve the integrity of the Columbia Water Plant (actually at the CAUD wastewater plant - CM) in case of flood waters of Russell Creek?

If I recall, the project was objected to by a group of local residents thought to be affected by the retention wall.

Was that project then not necessary and a total waste of limited taxpayer resources in the form of time, manpower and money? --Ed Pipalski

VFW Post 6097 votes unanimously to support VA Clinic effort

VFW Post 6097 fully behind Chester Whittington's idea for a multi-county Veterans Administration Clinic in Columbia. Petitions already being circulated by its members to validate public opinion on the proposal.

By Ed Waggener

The Columbia VFW 6097 voted unanimously to back the effort to secure a multi-county Veterans Administration Clinic in Columbia, KY, at its Thursday, 12 Feb 2015 meeting.

Commander Joe Hare said that the Post will promote the idea in every way. "Some our members already have been getting signatures on a petition we have started. Soon, there will be an open house at the Post for the purpose of veterans coming by and signing, if they have not already signed."

Attendance at the meeting was larger than usual, with members of the Post who live in Russell and Cumberland Counties attending in support of the idea, which, Commander Hare noted, was actually developed by Chester Whittington, the spokesperson who presented it to Adair Fiscal Court on Tuesday, 10 Feb 2015.

Wendy Burt says birds on Melson Ridge hadn't gotten GBBC word

Today, Sunday, February 15, 2015, is the last day of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC)
Click on headline for full story

By Wendy Burt

(Friday, February 13, 2015) - The birds on my Melson Ridge farm must not have gotten the word that the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) started at midnight because, while walking the dogs this morning, the birds definitely were playing hide & seek (no vultures? only one mourning dove?). Nevertheless, by listening, looking carefully, and almost beating the bushes, I was able to identify 17 different species in almost an hour's walk at first light.

Now I'm settled in with a hot cup of coffee, the fire is blazing in the wood stove, and the birdfeeders outside my windows are loaded with birds. So I'm starting my second count of the 4-day GBBC (I've already seen 3 species I did not spot on this morning's walk).

Participating in the count is fun, is easy, and contributes important scientific information about our wild birds. Information on the GBBC is at And if you have questions that cannot be answered on there, call Wendy Butler Burt of the Adair County Garden Club at 270-634-0504.

Poetry by Robert Stone: All past ifs

All past ifs
- a sonnet on an eighth anniversary
Infatuation fades but never dies.
Its embers smolder, sometimes flaming up
but less intense each time again they rise
and sooner dampened from despairing cup.

A would be love refuses to turn loose
though what it loves is but its own desire,
a first unfelt but ever tighter noose
that later strangles good but gentles dire.

What might have been will overwhelm what is
for all past ifs can have no future use,
poor answers not acceptable on quiz,
sad markers of a wasting time abuse.

Potential is a blessing or a curse,
a guide to better or a lure to worse.
- Robert Stone, 12 February 2015

Cyrus Edwards on the Elizabeth Wilson Family

Many of the details of the early days in Hart and Barren counties would be lost were it not for the stories of Cyrus Edwards (1846-1939) gathered into published form by his daughter Florence Edwards Gardiner in the year following her father's death.

From this book, Cyrus Edwards' Stories of Early Days, published in 1940 and reissued by the South Central Kentucky Historical Society of Glasgow and the Hart County Historical Society three times by 1981 we learn of the importance of Elizabeth Wilson and her family to the beginnings of Horse Cave more than two centuries ago.
