Letter: Elections have outcomes

Diane Miller writes:
They say election have outcomes. The first day of the new Republican congress they vowed to cut disability benefits, survivors benefits, all they had to do was transfer funds from the regular social security.

I worked for years, my deceased husband worked for years, paid into it for years. I am now on disability, and Republicans are trying hard to cut benefits, these cuts affect millions of people; even Republicans are on disability.

Better wake up, pay attention to what is going on, before it's too late. We are the people in the We the People.

A 20 percent cut would really hurt the big shots in Washington. They do not know what it is like, they need to walk in my shoes. Their pay should be cut; let them see what it is like.

Elections really do have outcomes. --Diane Miller

KY Afield Outdoors: Winter backyard birding basics

This is the second of a series of articles detailing essential outdoor skills to learn before the warm winds of spring arrive in Kentucky.

Contact: Lee McClellan

FRANKFORT, Ky. - The deepest, darkest, bleakest part of winter is here. The long slog from just after the holidays through the NCAA tournament is one of the toughest to weather, but watching the many species of birds that inhabit Kentucky in your backyard can brighten the most leaden days.

"Just this morning I didn't want to leave from watching all of the birds in my backyard," said Kate Heyden, avian biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "Winter is the best time to feed birds as they need the food now more than at any other time of year and you will typically see a greater number and variety of birds at bird feeders."

Heyden said Kentucky receives many interesting birds from the north in winter and again in spring when many species return home from lands south of us, providing a great variety of species to see.

Memories of a wonderful hunting, trapping boyhood

Today's urban culture for the most part is a most hypocritical culture. We, like packs of ravenous wolves, consume all kinds of meat yet lament the death of a cow, a hog, a sheep, a deer, a rabbit, a quail, a squirrel, etc., etc., etc. - BILLY JOE FUDGE
Comments re article 72497 Jackson Brower Childhood hunting experience his last ever

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Department of Forestry

I am profoundly sorry that you had such a life altering, disastrous, first hunting trip. It seems that you were not quite prepared either emotionally or experientially to be thrown into a situation where the death or injury of living creatures was a surety.

My Father, Ordell Fudge, was one of the most avid small game hunters who ever lived in The Great Wooded South.

Jackson Brower: Childhood hunting experience his last, ever

'I fired and winged him, obviously injuring the poor thing, but he continued flying away.' - - Jackson Brower

By Jackson Brower

When I was a kid, my dad, who was not much of a hunter but engaged in it sometimes for fun, insisted that I go pheasant hunting with him up in Rocky Ridge, McMurray, PA, up behind our house.

It was all woods back then; but now, it's mostly total suburbia. Anyway, I was 12 years old, and Dad equipped me with a Mossberg 20-guage shotgun. There were lots of pheasants back then (hardly any now), and it wasn't long before a couple flew up from a field we were traipsing through.
