This year's session we are only scheduled to meet for 30-days, and we spent the first week more or less getting the House of Representatives in order. One of our first responsibilities was to elect the individuals who will lead our caucus for the next two years. These are important and crucial roles, not only for our caucus but the General Assembly as a whole. As a member of the House Republican Caucus, the people we selected, Rep. Jeff Hoover as our Floor Leader, Rep. Stan Lee as our Caucus Chair, and Rep. Jim DeCesare as our Whip, will not only work with us on legislation to help our counties and local communities, but also seek to accomplish the goals we have to make Kentucky better by reaching across the aisle in a bipartisan manner. JIM: The anguish of the Corps displacement 60 years later Writer's parents remember how beautiful the short drive (was it KY 92? Could a bridge or causeway restore the nexus?) from Jamestown to Jabez was before the lake By JIM The diaspora forced by the impoundment of Lake Cumberland created a great deal of anguish, resentment, anger, and hatred among those forced to leave their homes, in many cases, properties that had been in the families for generations. That's been well over sixty years and there's still a lot of those emotions around and the now-few survivors and their descendants. (Same is true for those forced from the Mammoth Cave area, and that was another decade or more earlier.) I've heard both my mother and father speak of what a beautiful drive it was from Jamestown to Jabez, just a few miles as the crow flies (or as the wheel rolled). - JIM. Thanks, JIM: Add to the eminent domain victims those from the Dale Hollow area, from Barren River Reservoir, and the most recent mass displacement, Old Knifley and Green River Valley families. By the way: Does anyone know of reversals, of public land returning to private, and how those those eminent domain get their land back. - EW 2015-01-09 08:42:42 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History

Paul Patton: Precious Memories! Beech Grove School 'The relocation of families when Wolfe Creek Dam was constructed was very traumatic to say the least. I recall hearing Jake McFarland (husband of Miss Ovalene) say that there was never a day passed that he did not think of his old home place, now covered with water, and long to see Horseshoe Bottom once more.' - PAUL PATTON Paul Patton writes: Thank you Jim for transcribing the message on the postcard mailed to Miss Ovalene Humble. The reference to the Beech Grove School reminded me that in addition to the school there was also the Beech Grove Christian Church where the Humbles, McFarlands, Lesters, McClures and other well known families were members. The Beech Grove Cemetery is still at the original site and I have conducted funerals and burials there. After the families were relocated and the church was closed, many of the church members became members of the Christian Churches in Russell Springs, Jamestown and Freeedom. The relocation of families when Wolfe Creek Dam was constructed was very traumatic to say the least.
