By Victoria Pike
Personal commentary

Well after gas was at $1.99 for a few days, then went to $2.29 just as the cold hit, and now is down 27 cents.

Other places haven't had these wild swings in prices in the last few days so it must not have been a shortage issue.

KY Afield Outdoors: Proper spooling of spinning and baitcasting reels

This is the first of a series of articles detailing essential outdoor skills to learn before the warm winds of spring arrive in Kentucky.

By: Lee McClellan

FRANKFORT, Ky. - A family member bought you a nice spinning outfit for Christmas. Despite the cold, your desire to cast the new rod into water propels you to a local Fishing in Neighborhoods (FINs) lake to try to fool some winter rainbow trout.

Dutifully spooling on some fresh 4-pound test monofilament, you cast a red and silver in-line spinner a few times. As you move to a new spot and shoot a cast, you hear a sound similar to a flushing covey of quail and see a ball of spaghetti moving up the rod.

You now have a bird's nest of epic proportions, requiring cutting off the mess, pulling out the loops and retying the lure. You curse the brand of line you bought.

In all likelihood, it isn't the line's fault. Properly loading fishing line onto a spinning or baitcasting reel is a skill many anglers take for granted, but often do incorrectly, greatly reducing the line's performance. Incorrect line loading often causes tremendous line twist, the main culprit behind bird's nests.

Humbles relocated from Helm to Marion County, KY

Robert Cumming writes:
Ovalene Humble's parents, Louis and Thenora Humble, once owned property taken by the Department of the Army Corps of Engineers where Wolf Creek Dam is located. After the government took their river bottom property by eminent domain, the Humbles relocated to a farm in Marion County where Lebanon High School is now located. When rural electric came online in the forties Thenora Humble refused to sign their new farm up, believing the electricity came from Wolf Creek Dam!

My property on Greasy Creek was offered for sale by the Corps of Engineers in 1961 ten years after they took it by eminent domain in 1951 from Thenora Humble. - Robert Cumming

Letter: Would like to read message on postcard

Paul Patton writes:
Larry Smith's favorite postcard from Helm, KY to Miss Ovaline Humble caught my attention and, at the same time, made me feel rather ancient myself since I was well acquainted with the recipient of this postcard mailed well over a century ago.

Miss Ovaline did attend Lindsey Wilson and became a school teacher. She married Jake McFarland of Rowena and I was their pastor at Jamestown Christian Church in the 1960's. They spent their lives in Russell County where they were great citizens and wonderful people to know.

I could not read the message as shown in ColumbiaMag and would appreciate it if Larry would read it to me. --Paul Patton

Poetry by Robert Stone: Where entertainers learn

Where entertainers learn
- a sonnet for the birthday of Denice Hicks
Is not our Shakespeare but that blazing spot
where contradictions each the other touch,
where inconsistencies will foil dread plot,
where all do hear too little or too much.

Are not directors but those sparkling stains
where unforeseen new understandings grow,
where gesture never written down explains,
where proper hesitations speed the flow.

Is not the actor but new-sculpted mask
where character must override I am,
where each success leads to a higher task,
where steadiness resists desire to lam.

Are not the audiences but replies
where entertainers learn what dies, what flies.
- Robert Stone, 7 January 2015
