JIM: The new Green River bridge at Tebbs Bend, 1907 And now comes the answer to the second part, the name of the contractor for the Tebbs Bend bridge now being removed, and Mr. Robert Cumming's query: Wonders when the Tebbs Bend Bridge was built? Contractor?, and a whole lot more." There are are countless tidbits of information in this artickle worthy of rote memory for an eighth grade history class, including the name of the first person, a Rominian, to cross the bridge, comments by News editors about the new toll, and a deserved gig at the toll for a canoe ferry across the river when that was the only way of getting across. The canoe ferry was charging a 25 cent canoeage for the crossing. Compare that to the 10 cent toll Ralph Shearer, et al, charged almost 50 years later for a similar flat boat crossing when the Russell Creek Bridge collapsed on Campbellsville Street, an almost charitable fee even if that token fee sometimes had to be enforced with threats to toss the passengers in the deep waters if they refused to pay, which was their policy. With no further digression, you are encouraged to stop everything and read this. --EW By JIM The year 1907 got off to a fiery start in the northern part Adair with the burning of the Green River bridge. On Tuesday, January 1st, reported the Adair County News, Mr. John Stone, driver for J.B. Barbee's mail wagon, approached the bridge about 4:30 a.m. only to discover the Columbia end engulfed in flames. Mr. Stone immediately perceived he could get the wagon across, which he did in great haste. "After crossing he drove rapidly to the stage barn and informed the hostler and Mr. Henry Sublett of the fire, but when these gentlemen reached the scene the conflagration had gained such headway that the structure was doomed." The fire was believed to have originated at the hand of an incendiary. Ralph Waggener: Nathan Hale stood out as a model Christian Ralph R. Waggener writes: I was sad to hear of my good friend Nathan Hale's death. Constitutional Oath: Kentucky Constitution, Section 228 You'll find this on the back cover of the program for this afternoons "Swearing-In Ceremonies." This is the oath given to all state officers and attorneys at law:The oath often proves a real test of character or at least of personal qualities, and of personal relationships. Kentuckians are always riveted on the participants to see who breaks (perjures?) when levity occurs during the dueling affirmation. The Swearing-In Ceremonies are at 2pmCT, Sun 1 Jan 2015, in the Adair County Judicial Center, 201 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY. 2015-01-04 10:06:14 | Comments | Printable version

Betty Jane Gorin: History of Green River Ford and Bridges In this fascinating essay, written by the author of "Morgan is Coming" there's the answer to Robert Cumming's query: Wonders when the Tebbs Bend Bridge was built? Contractor? it answers the question of the date of the building of the bridge, tells of its paramount importance in Civil War history, and adds coincidental dates which which seem more than coincidental. By Betty Jane Gorin Short answer: 1907 Long answer below:At first the Green River on Tebbs Bend Road was forded at a place called DeMosses Ford. The earliest deeds spell it correctly; later deeds misspell the name. Then it started being called Green River Ford in the deeds. A ferry started being operated there next. That was followed by the first bridge, a covered bridge. Tom Chaney: The Developing Image of God Of Writers And Their Books: The Developing Image of God. Tom says Robert Wright nibbles at the underpinnings of the way we normally see the world. This column first appeared 3 January 2010. The next earlier Tom Chaney column: The Ledger of a Country Store By Tom Chaney The Developing Image of God Robert Wright writes fascinating and thought provoking books. One reviewer observes that his Moral Animal illuminates "such topics as friendship, monogamy, and xenophobia. Wright linked Darwinian thought to game theory to suggest that human history is moving inexorably toward 'win-win' global amity, that hatred has lost its usefulness in an increasingly interdependent world." Happy Tail: A New Year to remember. For Peg - 1975 Each year brings it's share of good memories, especially at New Year's. Some stay etched in one's mind, as New Year 1975 was for Peg Schaeffer, following a very sad 1974 when she was divorced and her father died. When that year rang in, she was spending it at a cabin heated by a wood stove, in Vermont, with friends. During those years, she was a 'Flower child,' she writes, 'Make love, not war. I had long hair, parted down the middle and a beaded head band. I wore bell bottoms, paisley prints, and miniskirts. At the time I was seeing a guy named Jimmy.' The story could be a start for a script for a movie. Click on headline for complete column.
