A Pilgrim in Town Creek bank Catalpa

2015-01-01 - E Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM photo.
We noticed this uniquely marked cat passing through our yard today. It found a place 12 feet up in a fallen catalpa for a vantage point to watch for prey, rest, or maybe scan the territory for hostile and friendly inhabitants. We noticed it for the first New Year's Day, 2015, most likely an omen we can't interpret. - EW

Poetry by Robert Stone: Familiar new strange

Familiar newly strange
- a sonnet for the birthday of Lisa Comperry
Lovers of sunrise know that - waiting not,
design unfolds with variations bold,
expected tie in unexpected knot,
the seeming uncontrolled in bounds controlled.

The sun at noon no shadow casts but noon
Is just a moment mortals have defined,
imagining a day where they commune
with elements that keep the world aligned.

As sunset moves apace it claims for us
the lessening of light, the ancient calm
disrupted by our modern artifice,
bright artificial stars that spoil the balm.

No one can see the sun that does not change
but each can see familiar newly strange.
- Robert Stone, 31 December 2014
