Russell Countian, Kenneth Bernard, at Battle of Breakneck Ridge

The World War II Battle of Breakneck Ridge was fought on Leyte, one of the Philippine Islands, 70 years ago this month--November, 1944. The men involved in that bloody, ferocious, sometimes hand-to-hand fighting included a quiet Russell Countian who would become one of its best known citizens.

A Quiet Man Goes to War

Everyone in Russell County either knew Mr. Kenneth Bernard or at least knows he founded a funeral home in Russell Springs and successfully ran it for over fifty years. Few, however, remember his gallant military service during World War Two.

Sometimes when I am minding my own business and not bothering anyone, a person will cross my path to test my patience and light my fuse. That happened to me a few weeks ago when I made a bathroom stop at a convenient store on Brooks Road outside of Louisville.

43 Entries in Birthdays today after midnight edit, deleting 2

Did we miss any significant Family Celebration in the CM 7-County area of Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell, and Taylor Counties? If so, it was an oversight. Use any Contact/Submit button to submit.

Today's stat: There were 45 entries at 12:01amCT, in CM BIRTHDAYS this morning, when we checked, scanned for duplications and edits needed. After checking the number was reduced to 43, but still a really impressive. One of the two edits was only a date change, and is now in it's proper place, May 15.

Band birhdays: We reviewed today for members of the 2014 ADAIR Band members having birthdays today, and found at least two current or Band Alums.

Some tiny bits of information telescope much bigger information. Reading CM Birthdays first and regularly does that for many people. One of our favorite readers and contributors watches for her family's entries, and often sends four to five or more additions, making the archives of ColumbiaMagazine.com much more useful each day. For more on that facet, and a note on some coincidences click on headline to read it all.

Send your submissions Now If you live in or are from Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell or Taylor Counties of Kentucky and have a special Anniversary, Birthday, or In Memory Birthday, or comment or related story, send now using any Contact/Submit button. Call 270-250-2730 if you need help. We're Now Posting.

And a note on the In Memory Birthdays. . They're not just for researchers or genealogists, though we post them with that in mind. A lot of folks scan them everyday to pause and remember someone special in their lives, whether a family member or not.
