Personal opinion of the writer
See response by Billy Joe Fudge: Mayoral leadership, vote of people, could stop Payroll Tax

Amy Pike writes

The election is tomorrow and everyone is still abuzz about the recent tax that was passed by the City Council.

This election has NOTHING to do with that tax and unless an entirely new council is seated, the tax is not going to be repealed.

Morrison family cabin, at Chance, is one of oldest in Adair

Cabin built in 1815; Trabue-Russell House built six years later

Robby Morrison writes:
A somewhat interesting addition to the story is that the family traces it roots back to the very beginning of Adair County and before. The cabin built in 1815 on Charlie Morrison Road is still standing today. It was originally build by the Patterson family which was Eb's mothers family. Given that the Trabue Russell house was built in like 1821, that old cabin is probably one of the oldest buildings still standing in Adair County.

Letter: Get Out and Vote

Victoria Pike writes:
I encourage everyone in the city, county, and state to get out and vote tomorrow. This morning I read a dear friends post that said his father was serving in the military many years ago to protect our right to go to the polls to vote. So lets remember and honor our veterans who have served by going out and voting.

Also, a big thank you to all of those who have volunteered to work the polls tomorrow. It is a long day that begins around 4 am and is over when the last vote is counted. So while you are at the polls, don't forget to give a big thank you to those citizens who have stepped up to do what they have for so many years by working the polls.

Hope to see each and everyone of you out voting tomorrow.

Adair Co. collection for Operation Christmas Child: Fri 17 Nov - Fri 14 Nov 2014

By Denise Fudge

Adair residents are packing joy into shoeboxes for children in need overseas.

With holiday supplies already covering the store shelves, individuals, families, churches and groups in and around Adair County are working to make Christmas a reality for kids in need around the world by filling shoeboxes with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement. National collection week, observed in Columbia, KY, November 17-24, 2014 operating hours above, at the Columbia First Church of the Nazarene Wheet Fellowship Hall, 1200 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY.

Anyone can drop off a gift-filled shoebox to send to a child overseas during the collection hours (See : Operation Christmas Child Schedule. Then, using whatever means necessary - trucks, trains, boats, bikes, and even elephants -the shoebox gifts will then be hand-delivered to children worldwide. For many children, this shoebox gift will be the first gift they have ever received. Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 113 million shoebox gifts to suffering children in more than 150 countries since 1993, and hopes to collect another 10 million gift-filled shoeboxes in 2014. Occupational License Tax Ordinance:

To read the payroll tax ordinance enacted Monday, October 6, 2014, by the Columbia City Council on a 5-1 vote, at the recommendation of Mayor Mark D. Harris, and the Revenue Committee (Councillors June Parson, Craig Dean, and Robert Flowers) see: Occupational License Tax Ordinance PDF This regular monthly meeting. Though posted as a working copy, only minor typographical changes were made.

Whether you are for the tax or not, the document makes interesting reading. Those opposed to the tax have asked that it be re-emphasized before the election so that everyone knows what they are facing. Only one Mayoral Candidate, write in candidate Ben Arnold, has called for the repeal of the ordinance on day one. One council member, Linda Waggener, voted against the ordinance on October 6, 2014. The other five council members voted for it. We have not yet heard the stance of Council candidates Kenneth Dulin or Craig Lasley, or whether any of the original supporters of the tax would wish to take a new look at it. Comments welcome. - EW

City Tax would be levied on $15 million AC School Payroll

Tax will mean $150,000, deducted from paychecks of all faculty and staff in the District. (In effect, it means a give back of one-half the small two percent pay increase allowed the teachers in their first pay increase in 7 years - EW)
Comments from other employers - pro or con - welcome, whether you see the tax as beneficial or are against it. -EW

Response from Superintendent Alan W. Reed

I want to answer Dr. Arnold's question regarding the percentage of our district's budget that is expended to salaries (Ben Arnold: How much of schools' $30 million budget is Payroll):
Out of a total budget of $28,352,589.29, salaries are a little under $15,000,000, or around half the budget.

This amount reflects the $600,000 in salary cuts after our consolidation efforts and personnel cuts last year This amount is likely below state average for percentage of total budget going to salaries. I will attempt to get the state average for you today.

According to our calculations, the City of Columbia, with the new 1% payroll tax, will receive about $150,000 in additional revenues for our salaries alone. I cannot answer for Lindsey Wilson College, but both CM and Dr Arnold are correct in that education is likely the biggest economic sector in the county.

Jim: A curious bit of Adair County history - 3 Nov 1920

By JIM

An arcane bit of local history appeared in the Adair County News ninety-four years ago today, November 3, 1920. The last line apparently misidentifies the purchaser, as the gentleman named was preceded in death by his wife.

"The bedstead upon which R.A.C. Martin, was laid out on, who was cashier of the Bank of Columbia, and who was murdered in the bank by the James boys and Youngers on the 29th day of April, 1872, left Adair County last Friday afternoon [October 29th]. It was purchased by Mr. T.P. Jeffries, and his widow gave it to her daughter, who lives in Lebanon."

The Scary Animals at Keltner: A childhood school days memory

The woods along the one-mile walk to Keltner School on the Adair-Metcalfe County line were fraught with frightening sounds, especially for a imaginative six year old when the courageous trek was taken all by herself

As related by Linda Waggener
Who heard the delightful story first hand in Greensburg; unfolded by CM

Ella Lee Oliver Wilson, remembers how scary the one mile trek to grade school at Keltner was when she was a child. She remembers that every school day, all along the wooded way to the schoolhouse for fourth grade classes, there would always be scary sounds, sounds of animals much more horrid than the Big Bad Wolf. A big bear. A huge bird. A big snake with huge teeth. All kinds of creatures.

Sometimes, in the 10 year old's imagination, the forest sounds made her heart beat so fast it would nearly jump out of her body; and her steps would quicken to the safety of the one room school. Sometimes she would even run - always do whatever it took to avoid the danger of the creature making he sound in the woods.

The worst day was when she heard an elephant. She said she'd shared this with her Sunday School class.
