KY Afield Outdoors: Blue Water Trails - South Fork, Licking River

Two floats on the South Fork of Licking River give a modern Kentuckian an understanding of why the pioneers braved such challenges to settle this pastoral and rich river valley.
This article is the thirtieth in the periodic Blue Water Trails series highlighting the floating, fishing and tourism opportunities on Kentucky's streams and rivers.

By Lee McLellan

FRANKFORT, Ky. - The pioneers settling along the verdant South Fork of Licking River in what is now Harrison County had a tenuous hold on their lands in 1780. The privations of carving crude civilization out of wilderness, the threat of attack by enraged Shawnee or their ilk, in addition to the whirlwind of the western theater of the Revolutionary War, all combined for a tough life.

A threat emanating from the north in the early summer of that year would eventually bring terror to this corner of the world. British Capt. Henry Bird and his Native American allies moved south from Detroit, crossed the Ohio River and moved into central Kentucky, via the Licking River system. A number of families, many of them Pennsylvania German, lived along the South Fork of Licking River in Ruddle's Station, near what is now Lair, Kentucky.

Kenny Absher: Wants a leader of vision leading Columbia

By Kenny Absher
Personal opinion of the commentator

Good for you. Dr. Ben Arnold. The city has gone so far down the tubes with its current status quo and the business owners have suffered long enough. I know I shop in Russell Springs and Campbellsville, but a leader with vision can bring prosperity back home.

Also as a county resident, taxation without representation is wrong; waiting like they did was wrong so no one else could run. They are just self-serving bureaucrats caring only for themselves. Kenny Absher, Cane Valley, KY

Thanks, Kenny Absher - Agree with you on needing leaders with vision; but not the attribution of selfish motives by those who voted for The Tax *(what most are calling a Payroll Tax or City Income Tax - the euphemistically self-style "Occupational License Tax").

VOTE FOR ACHS Daily
It only takes a couple of minutes and it's fun.

Jill W Smith writes:
Hey Ed. WOW!!!!! We can make this happen!!! The support for the Adair Co High School in the Celebrate My Drive Campaign has been OUTSTANDING!!!! We need to continue to VOTE every day! Adair Co is in the small school category! They are currently at 129 out of 1654 schools. They have moved up 62 spots since Monday! This is more than any other school has moved up. How AWESOME is that? In fact very few high schools from Kentucky have even made it in the Top 500. I think there are only 9. As this morning Monroe Co was at 98, Adair Co was at 129 and Cumberland Co was at 335. This is why we need everyone to go to the link and make a commitment to safe driving and VOTE for Adair Co High School. I can't thank Adair Co enough as once again you have rallied together and made a difference. We have until Friday at midnight to put Adair Co High in the Top 50!!!! With this continued OUTSTANDING support we can do it!! Please VOTE!!!! It only takes a few minutes!! We can do this!!! --Jill W Smith
