JD Gee: Almost 100 years ago Of barber shops & black eye peas; mills, marriage, & mercantile firms; cackleberries and concerts; and myriad other things in the News a century ago. Then, as today, 100 years later there were changes in business ownership, big goings on up on Lindsey Hill, and sports were the talk of the town. New School Books were causing controversy. Moonlight schools were as prevalent as those for GED's are in 2014. Renovation of water systems was headline news as it is today. There was news from Esto in Russell County, and a brilliantly written piece from native son Melvin White. By JD Gee The October 14, 1914 edition of the Adair County News, while short on news and long on boiler plate, still had several items of interest. Happy Tail: A lot of people help Sugarfoot do its work A lot of people have given support to Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, from local stores, the Cross County team at Lindsey Wilson, a network of friends like Brenda McQueary, Sandy Pyles, and Joan Dulworth; the rescue network friends, and relatives, and more. What follows in this article, and exception for Peg from our regular editorial guidelines, is just the tip of the iceberg. (Of course her high praise of CM has nothing to do with that.) - CM By Peg Schaeffer Last week Sheila Stephens came to the farm with a cardboard box full of toys to donate. She said she had cleaned out her dog's toy box and wanted the rescue dogs to have them. The dogs had a ball. I gave them half of the toys, most of them were stuffed squeaky toys, and within a short time it looked like it had snowed on our lawn. There was stuffing everywhere! But they had so much fun. I put the box on a shelf that I thought was out of their reach. I came out to find Elmo with his head buried in the box. He was pulling toys out one at a time so they would all have a toy to play with. Chuck Hinman: IJMA. The Flour Mill at Blue Rapids, Kansas The Flour Mill at Blue Rapids, Kansas. Chuck's father saved some of the wheat they grew and took it to the mill to become Hinman flour. Next earlier Chuck Hinman column - First Impressions By Chuck Hinman The Flour Mill at Blue Rapids, Kansas I have written many stories of my childhood. But one that frequently comes to mind when I am brainstorming for something to write is this one. It happened so long ago that some of the interesting detail may be missing. But if this story is anything like my others, I can count on a few of my faithful readers to fill in what I left out. In the harsh economic times when I was growing up on a farm near Wymore, Nebraska, my parents, Arley and Merle (Mouser) Hinman, became very skilled in 'making do' with what they had. I have written many of my 200 some stories about those times.
