Tom Chaney: Nancy Drew at 75

Of Writers And Their Books: Nancy Drew at 75. Tom discusses the history of the writing of the long-running series of Nancy Drew books. This column first appeared 14 August 2005.

By Tom Chaney

Nancy Drew at 75

In 1930 Nancy Drew sprang into life in The Secret of the Old Clock. She was a sixteen-year-old teenager speeding around River Heights in her small blue roadster solving crimes, rafting on white water, and cooking gourmet meals.

Nancy Drew was the last literary brainchild of Edward Stratemeyer, owner of the Stratemeyer Syndicate. He had created the Bobbsey Twins, Tom Swift, and the Hardy Boys. Those series for young people had become so popular that he saw a market for a girls' mystery-adventure series.

Local Writers.

The more I read, the less I seem to know, or at least remember. Someone once told me, and I have adopted the line, "I try to learn new things each day, but some old things seem to be pushed off the back side of my memory shelf." We are told that no thing is forgotten, just not as easily accessed as more and more is processed. An anecdote told of Albert Einstein says he was once asked for his address and his reply was that he didn't know. Why?, he was asked. His reply, that he saw no reason to try to remember such trivial information; if he needed to know, he'd ask someone.

Happy Tail: Just one of those days

So every day, Monday through Friday, was "one of those days". But guess what? I can look back at each day and laugh. I found "furever" homes for four puppies. Gladys doesn't have a broken leg. Gracie has a new "do". Max, the Golden Retriever is on the mend and will be available for adoption if we don't find his owner. And Hercules - he might have had a longer stay but when Keith went to pick him up he got to see Shiloh, Hercules' sister, who has been at the vet's since August 11 for wound therapy. "One of those days" wasn't so bad after all. - Peg Schaeffer
Next earlier Peg Schaeffer column: -Happy Tale: Brutus. happy in his new home Posted 29 Sep 2014.

By Peg Schaeffer

Did you ever have one of those days? Well I've had one every day this week. On Monday a woman called me about four puppies she needed to find homes for. She said she'd been calling the shelter all morning and hadn't gotten an answer. I told her that the shelter was closed on Mondays and that they would open on Tuesday.

She went on and on telling me how she couldn't afford to feed them and that there mother had abandoned them. She was going to contact her friend and bring them to me that night. She never called back and never showed up.

Sending scores? Don't overlook this important metric

Attendance is an important metric. It helps the community, instills confidence in your area of interest. (See: Football 04 Oct 2014: LWC 31. Cumberlands 28 for a big attendance figure this past week)

Thanks to Chris Wells, Lindsey Wilson Sports Information Director, for sending the attendance figure for the Lindsey Wilson Football Game on Saturday 4 Oct 2014: It was big, 1,782, bigger than the whole city of Columbia was just seven decades ago.

We're not sure whether that was the most attended event in Adair County yesterday, or even this past week, but it certainly was near the top.

Attendance figures are vital for a number of reasons: They let the community know if there is anything there, there. They are indicators to business leaders and tourism about which activities are a net win for the community, and it lets us know, at CM, how to prioritize among all the submissions to see which one gets the most attention and which ones are worth posting.

One note: Even if attendance figures are very, the community wants to see a winning winning vector. In the history of CM, we've noticed some surprises: That many times the biggest attendance is in areas too often taken for granted, such as cultural and academic events, so those attendance numbers are important, too.

We think it's important for family reunions, farmers markets, event revivals. - CM

Chuck Hinman: First Impressions

First Impressions

Not long after I began a business career with Phillips Petroleum Company, I discovered that my line of work required the expertise of Phillips' large and impressive legal department. There was a staff of about eight to ten attorneys that specialized in giving legal advice on land and geological matters only. Since my work had to do with land titles, Mr. Robert Burgess (Bob, to his close friends) was our designated 'go-to' attorney in such matters.

I, as a new hire, found Mr. Burgess to be a most intimidating person to deal with.
