CJE Ann Melton responds to Bill Henson on road funds issue

CJE equates promises of blacktop in exchange for votes to vote buying, which is illegal, whether 'it's always been done,' or not.
In response to: Bill Henson on Road Money Issue: Way it's always been

By Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton
Personal Commentary

Thanks Bill Henson.

Finally, someone gets it and admits it. With 600 miles of county roads to maintain, I, as County Judge, welcome anyone who brings additional road funds to Adair county.

You are right, Bill, it's not the first time.

It's been done in very recent times.

I CAN PROUDLY SAY I HAVE NEVER ASK FOR VOTES IN THE NAME OF BLACKTOP.

Last I checked buying votes is illegal. When I ran for County Judge in 2006 I would not have dreamed of going to then Governor Fletcher to ask him to let me have control of tax dollars to campaign with. This is WRONG, IT'S UGLY, and it's completely unethical.

s/Ann Melton

Ralph Waggener: Bam Carney grandstanding at its best

CJE Ann Melton's past record on roads and her courage in tackling the hospital have won writer's endorsement
In response to: Bill Henson on Road Money Issue: Way it's always been

By Ralph (Out of Order) Waggener
Personal Commentary

To Bill Henson: Really Bill, you know better. This was grandstanding at its best; we had already received the money for roads that this would have dipped into. Bam Carney is for Taylor, not Adair, and that’s OK.

We have had a lot of road work done for many years by Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton. We have had more roads built by her and have saved more money on these roads than at any time in Adair’s history.

Ralph Waggener: Procession elicits similar memories - from 1989

The Tony Grider Procession brought back memories of the writer's best friend's procession from Elizabethtown to Columbia, and he writes, 'Then seeing Orvis walking into the funeral home brought tears to my eyes as it did to all others there. No father or mother should ever have to see their child's funeral!' - Ralph Waggener

Junior and Donna Feese rode back from our very close friend's, FBI agent Arthur Corbin's, funeral which was held in Elizabethtown, with Glinda and I. I'll never forget the feeling we got seeing the respect for Arthur of people standing by the road on trip home, to Columbia and his final resting place in Haven Hill Cemetery. He was only 43 years old when he died, October 5, 1989.

With the tolling of the bells: A sad moment in Columbia history

It has to be one of the saddest times ever in Columbia, when, in Judge Hurt's words, ". . . with the tolling of the bells and with the sincere sorrow of the community, the hearse drove out of town carrying his remains for interment at his old home in Shelby county." Judge H.C. Baker, writing just over a quarter century after the crime, had no use for those who would glorify the memory of the robbery of the Bank of Columbia and the cold-blooded killing of a good man, R.A.C. Martin on April 29, 1872. (Last reprinted in Columbia Magazine.com: 2010-04-30 07:14:10
About Historian has no sympathy for the James Gang

By Jim

Were Judge Herschel Clay (H.C.) Baker around to read Mr. Saeli's commentary about the death of Mr. RAC Martin, there is no doubt the good Judge's response would be, "Absolutely, Mr. Saeli -- I agree!"

In April, 1898, Judge Baker penned for the Adair County News a lengthy article about the bank robbery and Mr. Martin's death. At the time, Mr. Baker was a young lawyer who practiced law and lived in Columbia.

JIM: 100 years ago, Adair Co. at the autumnal equinox, 1914

Like your family's favorite baker telling you how badly her chocolate cake turned out and you know there's not been a better one, ever out of Vienna (Austria, not Illinois), JIM submitted this as 'this'll have to do one' ar-tickle, when in fact is pretty nigh as good as ar-tickles get: It has it all. Our over-gloried rowdy side, with account of a ruckus out on Jamestown Road. The correlation between righteous fervor and the tides of war. Columbia's love of fashion and the arrival of the 'swellest, noblest and most up-to-date' headgear. Of the good economic times when re-soling shoes was two bits a pair (contrasted to today's re-souling the soul for an average of so much more). A tribute to a great country scribe, Rev. Thomas Hadley. And the revelation everybody is ringing our phone off the hook to learn, Just who was Old Sister Bill Brown? Finally, what every parent wants to know today, a dose of what the the Peevish Child needs. - EW

By JIM

The front page of the autumnal equinox (September 23rd) 1914 edition of the Adair County News brought any number of dispatches to the attention of the reader.

The young Misses English, Golda and Dexter, on the previous Thursday evening, delightfully entertained a number of the younger set in honor of an out-of-state guest. The attendees included Misses Susan Miller, Leonora & Mary Lucy Lowe, and Ella Walker; and the Messrs. Edgar Diddle, Paul Hughes, Edgar Reed, Doc & Nat Walker, and Ralph Hurt. Said the paper, "The evening was spent in contests and games, after which delightful refreshments consisting of fruits, ices and cakes were served."

The Procession Carrying Capt. Tony Grider Home

Click on headline for album to date. In progress.

By Ed Waggener

It is the saddest of times. For the Columbia Community, one would have to reach back in history more than 142 years to find a moment at this time of day, at dusk, to find a time so nearly as heart rending as the Community witnessed yesterday afternoon, as the procession carrying Capt. Tony Grider home made its way slowly south around the square past icons of what Capt. Tony Grider loved, symbols of where he served with such extraordinary enthusiasm and dedication, where his boundless optimism sparked community pride and community change.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Life goes on apace

Life goes on apace
-a villanelle for the birthday of Logan Blackford, 15 Sep 2014
Another crash is tearing living lace.
There always is a thing that can go wrong
but small enough that life goes on apace.

The undeterred continues with the race
creating possibles, some weak, some strong.
Another crash is tearing living lace.

Relentless though the daily weary case,
the warrior notes disaster on each prong
but small enough that life goes on apace.

Undaunted courage fixed on eager face
will never recognize defeat's loud gong.
Another crash is tearing living lace.

The brave who seize each chance will leave bright trace
upon large leavings that around will throng
but small enough that life goes on apace.

Around the edges torn, love finds its place
determined to pour forth defining song.
Another crash is tearing living lace.
but small enough that life goes on apace.
- Robert Stone, 15 September 2014

Bill Henson on Road Money Issue: Way it's always been

By Bill Henson
Personal Commentary

Ed, I truly don't understand the hoopla over the discretionary road money. This has been that way for years and especially so in an election year. When I lived on Buck Watson road it was chipped and sealed in good state of repair.

Kenny Isaacs was running against Vernie McGaha we got a call from magistrate Joe Rogers and he said we could get the road blacktopped if we would try and get as many of the votes on that road as possible for Kenny.

Being of the same party as Joe and Kenny this was no problem. The road was completed in late October before the election. So whatever money comes into the county and wherever it is spent should be welcomed, regardless of who gets the credit.

Dr. Smith wonders why Rep. Carney pushes unqualified roads

By Roger D Smith
Personal commentary

Dear Ed: I am in something of a conundrum over these road funds. I just don't understand the evident stand-off of how the funds are to be used. The state man has said that certain roads don't qualify for the funds, but our state representative, Mr. Carney, says do them anyway. I don't think that if I were Judge Executive or a candidate for the office that I would feel comfortable with this advice.

If the funds are misused, who answers to the state officals? In turn does the County stand to pay for the road work without any state funds, or do we lose all the funds. It would seem that the best course of action would be to heed the advice of the state officals and do as much as we can to live within their rules. We have to remember that the BOSS may not always be right, BUT HE IS STILL THE BOSS! - Roger D Smith

I was a piano player but there was no piano at Limestone Methodist. The only musical instrument was a new Hammond organ. Beth Johnson was the organist.
