John Ford: Instead of new city tax - cut spending substantially

Writer doesn't think that things are so bad that we have to merge city and county governments just yet. After budget cuts, he would go along witha tax increase, not a NEW Tax but a tax increase.

By John Ford writes:
I agree Ralph most are afraid to give their opinion, I also agree that we spend too much in totally unnecessary places and didn't make needed cuts when they would have made a larger difference. We have been on a serious downhill slide recently, but you can't just keep raising taxes to pay for it. I don't think things are so bad that we have to merge city and county governments just yet but they are heading in that direction. What I find distasteful is the idea that raising taxes is the only option...ever heard of budget cuts. At a time when the whole country is having to tighten their belts, the city seems to be letting theirs out . Cut spending (substantially) and I will go along with a tax increase...not a NEW tax but a tax increase. - - John Ford

LWC Malvina Farkle Day brings community closer together

Malvina Farkle Day brings Lindsey Wilson College closer to Columbia-Adair County Community. It was held - couldn't have been missed by anyone in Columbia - yesterday, Wednesday, 10 Sep 2014.
By Duane Bonifer

COLUMBIA, KY -- Lindsey Wilson College senior Cambry Underwood of Greensburg, KY, had never participated in the college's Malvina Farkle Day until this year.

Because she has been a commuter student, Underwood said she had always skipped the college's day of community service. That changed this year when Underwood was one of more than 100 students in LWC's nursing program who took part in the day.

Opinion: The Occupational Tax and Economical Development

Time for Merger? Writer proposes: One Government, One Budget, One law Enforcement, One Economic Development Effort, One Community United, and One Tax
Just One Opinion, writer says with this commentary

By Ben Arnold

Columbia and Adair Co are One Community: Are there any important distinctions between those living or working within vs. without the City limits? Will the proposed occupational tax provide an incentive for new industry and jobs to be located outside the city limits? Why should those working within the city limits pay tax to create jobs when that tax provides an incentive for those very same jobs to be located outside the City? Is there a false assumption that only people within the city as represented by their city government want community advancement? Is the occupational tax motivated foremost for economic development or just to get some more money? Maybe we should be clear and separate the purposes.
